Gottlieb Ludwig Theophil von Beville , baptized Louis Theophile le Chenevix de Beville, (* July 28, 1734 in Berlin ; † April 9, 1810 ibid) was a Prussian officer , most recently General of the Infantry and Governor of the Principality of Neuchâtel .

Life

origin

Gottlieb Ludwig comes from the Huguenot family le Chenevix de Beville from the Chartres province. His ancestor was the Councilor Benjamin le Chenevix de Beville, who had come to Prussia before the Edict of Nantes was repealed and the Huguenots were persecuted. There he had acquired the Rheinsberg rule including the city from General Franz du Hamel in 1685 .

His parents were the Prussian Lieutenant Colonel Johann Heinrich le Chenevix de Beville (1685–1775) and his wife Susanna, née de Montolieu Baronesse de St. Hippolyte (1705–1780), daughter of Major General in Prussian service Louis de Montolieu , Chevalier , Baron de St. Hippolyte (1667–1738), from Saint-Hippolyte-de-Caton . He sold Rheinsberg Castle to Crown Prince Friedrich II in 1734 .

Military career

Béville was employed on December 21, 1749 as a private corporal in the 23rd Infantry Regiment "von Forcade" . As an ensign , he took part in the 1756/63 campaign in the siege of Schweinitz , the attack on Hochkirch and the battles near Zorndorf , Liegnitz and Torgau . On April 5, 1757 he was promoted to second lieutenant and a year later appointed wing adjutant to the king.

On May 8, 1764 he was transferred to the 36th Infantry Regiment "von Kleist" as a major . In May 1773 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on June 26, 1777 colonel . In 1778 he received the order Pour le Mérite for his achievements . In 1779 he was appointed governor of Neuchâtel. But he was in Berlin most of the time. He only spent the troubled years from 1799 to 1802 in Neuchâtel. In 1801 he was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle .

In the period from 1756 to 1779 he took part in all campaigns and in 1761 was taken prisoner near Schweidnitz . But it was exchanged after two months.

On May 20, 1785 he was appointed major general and became chief of the regiment on foot "Leopold von Braunschweig" No. 24 . In 1786 he accepted homage to King Friedrich II of Prussia in the Principality of Neuchâtel. In 1790 he was appointed lieutenant general. In 1806 he was replaced as governor by Louis-Alexandre Berthier and retired with the character of a general of the infantry.

He is buried in the church of Stülpe .

Beville was married to Juliane Eleonore von Voss , widowed von Rochow (born March 15, 1734, † November 6, 1806). After her death in 1807 he married Luise Charlotte Friederike, née Freiin von Holl (1763–1847), widow Erasmus Ludwig Friedrich von der Groeben .
