Johann David Erdmann Preuss

Johann David Erdmann Preuss (born April 1, 1785 in Landsberg ad Warthe , † February 25, 1868 in Berlin ) was a German historian.

Life

The son of a master tailor, who was born in Landsberg ad Warthe in 1785 , went to school in Frankfurt an der Oder and, after graduating from high school, studied theology , philology and philosophy first at the Viadrina , then from 1810 at the newly opened Berlin University . In 1816 he got a job as a teacher of German language, history and geography at the Königl. Friedrich Wilhelms Institute. Preuss published numerous writings, primarily pedagogical and historical content, and became a recognized specialist in the field of Brandenburg-Prussian history, especially in the 18th century , thanks to his four-volume life story of Frederick the Great, which was published from 1832–1834 and was based on numerous documented sources . The work was created in an intensive exchange with Karl Heinrich Siegfried Rödenbeck . On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Frederick II's accession to the throne , he was entrusted with the editing of a new edition of the king's writings that met scientific standards. He received editorial support from 1840 to 1846 from the French philologist Paul Ackermann , who came from Alsace . From 1840 the preparatory work began on the 'Academy edition' of the works of Frederick the Great, printed at state expense, which appeared in 30 volumes in two parallel printed editions from 1846 to 1856. Preuss, to whom Varnhagen gave precedence over the tendril he had previously referred to as the 'matador of the newer historians' , is hardly considered in the current reference works on German historiography. His correspondence, which is kept in various libraries and archives (among others with Karl Wilhelm Böttiger , Wilhelm Ludwig Hertz , Gottfried Schadow and Karl August Varnhagen von Ense) is largely untapped. Only his correspondence with Alexander von Humboldt (contributions to Alexander von Humboldt research, vol. 43, edited by Ulrich Päßler and Anna Senft, 2015) and a letter from Theodor Fontane to Preuss (Fontane-Blätter 1996) have been published so far.
