Erasmus Ludwig Friedrich von der Groeben (born January 7, 1744 on Löwenbruch , † September 5, 1799 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Prussian major general and envoy in Saint Petersburg.

Life

origin

His parents were Ernst Ludwig von der Groeben (1703–1774) and his wife Maria Elisabeth, born von Redern (1718–1780), daughter of Erasmus Wilhelm von Redern auf Schwante. His father was the Prussian president of the Kurmärkischen chamber, district administrator of the Teltow district and heir to Löwenbruch and Wünsdorf. His uncle Sigismund Ehrenreich von Redern was court marshal of Sophie Dorothea von Hannover , mother of the Prussian King Friedrich II.

Career

Groeben joined the Gensdarmes regiment in 1758 as a standard junker and became a cornet on October 22, 1758 . During the following Seven Years' War he fought near Zorndorf , Kunersdorf and Torgau . On September 17, 1764 he became a lieutenant and on April 30, 1776 staff assistant master . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 . On May 30, 1781 he became a captain and company commander and was promoted to lieutenant colonel by January 17, 1795 . On February 6, 1797 he was appointed regimental commander. A little later, on April 12, 1797, he was promoted to major general and Groeben succeeded Bogislav Friedrich Emanuel von Tauentzien as envoy at the Russian court. He died on September 5, 1799 in Saint Petersburg.

family

On June 25, 1798, he married Luise Charlotte von Holl (* 1763; † June 23, 1856), a lady-in-waiting of the Queen's widow Elisabeth Christine . The marriage remained childless. After the early death of her husband, the widow married Gottlieb Ludwig von Beville (1734–1810) in 1807 .
