Life

origin

His grandfather Martin von Thile was a Prussian colonel and head of the regiment. His father Friedrich Leopold von Thile (1711–1779) was initially in the Prussian service, but in June 1746 he switched to the Electoral Saxon service as a major and rose to lieutenant general and head of an infantry regiment. His mother was his wife Katharina Rebekka, born von Firnhaber (1723–1777).

Military career

Thile became a lieutenant in the Electoral Saxon bodyguard on December 9, 1752, but initially had no service. That changed in 1757 with the beginning of the Seven Years' War . After the Saxon defeat, he joined the French army, where he fought in the battles of Bergen and Minden in the battle near Lutterberg and the siege of Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel. On July 24, 1762 he became a captain . After the war he returned to the Saxon Army , became a major on June 2, 1778 and as such took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . On June 9, 1787 he left the army and entered Prussian services on July 1, 1787 as a major with a patent from August 29, 1780 . He became chief of Fusilier Battalion No. 14 and was promoted to colonel by mid-August 1790 . As such, he took part in the campaign in Poland , on January 6, 1795, he was major general and chief of the infantry regiment "von Pfuhl".

His appointment as a member of the border regulation commission between Prussia and Russia in 1796 was politically important. Lieutenant General on May 20, 1801 (patented May 23, 1801). At the review on June 25, 1802 in Warsaw , he received the order Pour le Mérite and a gift of 2000 thalers. Then he was on August 3, 1803 at the revue of the Saxon troops in Dresden and then at the autumn maneuvers in Potsdam . After the mobilization, Thile marched on November 27, 1805 with a reserve corps from Glogau to Silesia . After demobilization he came back to Warsaw. Shortly before the Fourth Coalition War , he also received 2,000 thalers as a gift on August 4, 1806 to cover his expenses while working in the border commission. On September 11, 1806, he became interim governor of the Wroclaw Fortress with orders to hold the fortress under all circumstances. But on January 5th, 1807, he handed the fortress over to the French. After the war there was therefore a court martial and he was sentenced on March 19, 1811 to two years imprisonment in Spandau . However, on April 29, 1811, the king allowed him to serve his arrest in the city of Spandau. He died on February 24, 1812 in Spandau.

German-Russian Border Commission

He was already head of the infantry regiment in Warsaw when he was appointed a member of the commission on December 25, 1795. Major Stein and the war councilor Vetter were also present. The commission received precise instructions from the king. It was thanks to the skill of General Thile that there were always compromises with Prince Repnin and General Panin. On July 11, 1796, a deal was concluded and on behalf of the king General Thile presented Prince Repnim with the Order of the Black Eagle and General Panin with the Order of Red Eagle , plus a gift of 4,000 thalers.

There is no reference to this in Kurd von Schöning's Historical News from the von Schöning family, page 46 . He had a daughter August, but she was married to the war council of Linger in Magdeburg, but the granddaughter of General Auguste (sic!) Was married to Thiles' son Adolf Eduard. It is therefore probably a mix-up.
