Kurd Wolfgang Wilhelm Gustav von Schöning (born August 13, 1789 in Morrn , Landsberg an der Warthe district , †  April 2, 1859 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian major general and military writer.

Life

origin

Kurd came from the Pomeranian noble family von Schöning . His parents were Christian Stephan von Schöning (1752-1802), landowner and district administrator of the Landsberger Kreis, and his wife Albertine Juliane Therese Tugendreich († 1844), daughter of Lieutenant General Ehrenreich Wilhelm Gottlieb von Besser . The parents divorced in 1796.

Career

He had earned merit in the Prussian army service and, as a personal adjutant , won the trust of the young Prince Carl von Prussia (1801–1883), whom he had accompanied on his travels to Italy and Russia. Schöning resigned as major general in 1827. In the same year he was by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. appointed court marshal to Prince Carl. In the following years he emerged as a military historian with numerous works .

In 1843 he became the owner and resident of the Villa Schöningen , named after the town of Schöningen (near Braunschweig, place of origin of the von Schöning family) , located opposite Glienicke Palace , the summer residence of Prince Carl. The representative suburban villa was built according to plans by Ludwig Persius . The architect designed it as part of the Potsdam cultural landscape planned by Peter Joseph Lenné and Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the style of an Italian tower villa. Von Schöning lived in this villa with his family until his death in 1859.

Based on a drawing by Franz Krüger (1797–1857), a self-published portrait that was produced in 1829 as a lithograph has been preserved. In 1824 von Schöning published the historically relevant “Journal von Glienicke”, in which the social and cultural events of the family of Prince Carl of Prussia were recorded.

family

Schöning married Charlotte von Bornstädt (1795–1841) in Gülzow in 1815. She had the following children:
