Karl August von Schwartz (born December 15, 1715 at Hohenthurm Castle near Halle , † March 24, 1791 in Neisse ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , chief of infantry regiment No. 49 and governor of Neisse.

Life

His father was the privy councilor Friedrich Franz von Schwartz, heir to Hohenthurm.

Military career

Schwartz joined the Prussian Army under Friedrich Wilhelm I and joined the Marwitz Infantry Regiment No. 21 on March 3, 1733 . He served himself up there and became an ensign on August 22, 1738 . In 1740 Frederick II became king and reorganized the army. And so on February 6, 1741, Schwarz was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the Guard . He marched with the battalion to Silesia and fought at Mollwitz on April 10th . After the battle, the siege and conquest of Brieg continued . The king then accepted him into the unit that provided the personal bodyguard. In October Schwartz was at the siege of Neisse and after the capture he went with the command to Berlin. In February 1742 he returned to his battalion in Potsdam . On July 4, 1744 he was second lieutenant and in 1752 prime lieutenant .

Also in the Seven Years' War he came back to the king and fought on October 1, 1756 in the Battle of Lobositz . After the surrender of the Saxon army at Pirna , Major General Wilhelm von Saldern took over the former Saxon-Gotha regiment and Schwartz was transferred to the regiment as a major on November 3, 1756 . He accompanied the regiment to Magdeburg, where it was transferred to Prussian service. On March 3, 1758 he took it to Leipzig . In 1759 he was given command of a grenadier battalion, which was formed from the companies of the regiments "Prinz Heinrich" No. 35 and "Münchow" No. 28 . He became the successor to Major General Friedrich August von Schenckendorf . The battalion marched to Bamberg under the command of Major General Karl Gottfried von Knobloch . There they defeated the Austrians and Imperial troops under General Ried and captured the town's magazines. Then they marched back and fought on August 12, 1759 in the battle of Kunersdorf . There the regiment was one of eight that formed the vanguard under Major General Schenkendorf. They were able to drive the Russians out of two entrenchments and capture numerous cannons. Black was wounded in the left side and his horse injured three times. The bullet reached his spine and he should have it removed immediately. He went to Stettin to recover . After recovering in November, he went back to his battalion in Freiberg .

In April 1760 he led it to the army of Prince Heinrich and marched through the Neumark to Poland against the Russians. Afterwards it swung to Breslau , which was besieged by General Laudon , and horrified the city. The army united with the king's army and marched on Torgau . When the battle of Torgau broke out there on November 3rd , the battalion and nine others under the leadership of Generals Stutterheim (the elder) and Friedrich Wilhelm von Syburg made the first attack. Major Schwartz was injured in the left shoulder, his sword was shot and his horse was killed.

In the spring of 1761, he escorted the supply convoy of the royal army from Torgau to Striegau with his battalion and 200 hunters on foot . In August he was sent to the Bunzelwitz army camp and then to Strehlen. From there the battalion was transferred to the corps of General Schenkendorf (the younger) and initially stationed in Glogau , in order to prevent the Austrian General Philipp Levin von Beck from advancing into the march. Then he went to Pomerania with the Schenkendorff Corps to relieve Kolberg. In 1762 he was with the Corps Tauentzien to siege the fortress Schweidnitz. After the Treaty of Hubertusburg , he led the battalion back to Potsdam.

Then transferred to the king in the regiment "Fouquet" No. 33 and had him coordinate the advertising for the Saxon infantry. On May 24, 1764 he became lieutenant colonel and commander of the Stechow infantry regiment No. 29 . On May 19, 1766 he became a colonel and on September 13, 1770 chief of the infantry regiment "Diericke" No. 49 in Neisse; on May 23, 1771 he was appointed major general.

In the War of the Bavarian Succession , Schwartz was in the king's army. He was on his way back to Bohemia when an Austrian attack took place near Leopold, which was successfully repulsed. On May 21, 1783, he was appointed lieutenant general. In May 1788 he received a pension because of his age . He gave up his regiment and became governor of Neisse. Schwartz died there in 1791.
