Friedrich Wilhelm of Syburg

Friedrich Wilhelm von Syburg (* July 1, 1709 ; † August 30, 1770 at Gut Wackern near Königsberg in Prussia ) was a royal Prussian major general and head of an infantry regiment. He was the bearer of the order Pour le Mérite and heir to Wackern.

origin

He was a son of the Imperial Russian Colonel and commander of the Guard Regiment Otto Friedrich von Syburg (* March 13, 1676, † July 14, 1721) and his wife Katharina Louise von Tettau widowed von Buttlar from the House of Sandlacken. His brother Otto Ludwig von Syburg was also a Prussian major general.

Life

At the age of 13 he joined the Prussian cadets. In 1730 he became a private corporal with the "Dönhoff Regiment on foot" . On May 5, 1735 he became a lieutenant , in 1745 he became a captain and on July 5, 1749 major. In 1757 he became lieutenant colonel and in December 1758 colonel and in 1765 he was appointed major general.

He was able to distinguish himself at Salest at the beginning of the Seven Years' War when he was able to hold the position against attacking Pandours as a major of his regiment now called "Itzenplitz on foot" . In the battle of Lobositz on October 1, 1756 he received the order Pour le Mérite , but he was wounded at Hochkirch and Torgau . In 1760 he became head of his regiment himself, now under the name "Syburg on foot". This enabled him to distinguish himself in the battle of Langensalza (February 15, 1761). There he defeated the Franco-Saxon troops under Stainville and the Count of Solms with General Spöcken's troops from the Electorate of Hanover at the head of a division of 6 battalions and 25 squadrons with 20 guns . On May 21, 1762, he was transferred to a regiment , which from then on bore his name "Syburg on foot" . In 1762 he also had his own brigade in Prince Heinrich's army, in which he was involved in the battle near Döbeln on May 12, 1762 under Lieutenant General Hans Wilhelm von Canitz in the 2nd attack column .

He died of a stroke on his Wackern estate in 1770.

He was married to Martha Sophie von Holzendorf († December 2, 1783 in Königsberg) from the Uckermark. After the death of her husband, she received a salary from the king . The couple had the following children:
