Hans Wilhelm von Kanitz (born November 28, 1692 in Podangen ; † April 10, 1775 at Gut Krafftshagen) was a Prussian officer , most recently Lieutenant General , Chief of Infantry Regiment No. 2 and Knight of the Pour le Mérite .

Life

Hans Wilhelm was the third son from the first marriage of the Oberburggrave of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm von Kanitz (1656-1719) with Sophia Barbara von Tettau (1664-1707).

Kanitz has already appeared in 1704 as Junker in which at the time by his uncle Christoph Albrecht von Kanitz guided Infantry Regiment "von Kanitz" no. 14 a. Kanitz received the rank of Premier Lieutenant on April 7, 1714 and on September 8, 1724 - now with the rank of captain - was company commander in the infantry regiment "Graf Finckenstein" No. 14. On November 27, 1735 he was made major on April 20 1741 to lieutenant colonel and Patent of 20 January 1745. Colonel promoted. In July of the same year he became the commander of the "von Borcke" infantry regiment No. 29 . On June 12, 1750 he was appointed major general and chief of the infantry regiment "von Schlichting" No. 2 , which from then on - as was customary at the time - bore his name. Kanitz took part in the Spanish War of Succession in the campaigns in Italy (1704) and the Netherlands (1713) and was used in the siege of Stralsund in 1715 as part of the Pomeranian campaign . In the First Silesian War he led a battalion of two companies each from regiments No. 11 and No. 14 , fought with this battalion in the Battle of Chotusitz and was then awarded the Order of Pour le Mérite . In the Second Silesian War he fought at Habelschwerdt in 1745 and in the battles at Hohenfriedberg and Thrush . During the Seven Years' War he was initially given the cover of East Prussia south of the Memel with four grenadier battalions, the Dragoon Regiment "von Plettenberg" No. 7 and the 1st Battalion of the Hussar Regiment "von Ruesch" . In 1757 he took part in the battle of Groß-Jägersdorf . In July 1758 he was deployed with the vanguard at Küstrin to cover Berlin against the Russian army and then led the center of Prussian forces against them in the battle of Zorndorf , which was costly for his regiment , in which he was wounded. Kanitz also took part in the battles at Kay , Kunersdorf , Torgau and Freiberg . He was also able to distinguish himself in the passage over the Mulde and in the siege of Anklam .

family

His first marriage (1723) was to cousin Sophia Elisabeth von Kanitz († 1724), daughter of Major Melchior Abel von Kanitz (1667–1716) on Kraftshagen and Schwaraunen and Katharina Luise von Perbandt († 1719). From this marriage a daughter, Sophia Augusta von Kanitz (1724–1769) emerged. In his second marriage (1728) he also married a cousin, Adelgunde Katharina von Kanitz (1698–1776), daughter of the royal Prussian brigadier Melchior Ernst von Kanitz († 1730) on Maxkeim and Kraftshagen and Anna Maria von Schlieben († 1733) . This marriage remained childless.
