Carl Friedrich Wilhelm von Hamberger (born February 20, 1745 in Schluesselburg , † July 1, 1811 in Elbing ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Hamberger came from a Hessian noble family from the Anspach area . His father was a colonel in Russian service, his mother was born von der Lith.

Military career

He was initially a cadet in Berlin from June 1758 . On April 22, 1762 Hamberger was employed as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Syburg" of the Prussian army . During the campaign in 1762/63 he took part in the siege of Schweidnitz and the battles near Leutmannsdorf and Adelsbach. As a second lieutenant Hamberger was from July 1773 adjutant of the grenadier battalion "von Collrep". He took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 , was in the meantime Prime Lieutenant on November 1, 1778 and then came on July 28, 1782 as a staff captain in the infantry regiment "von Schott". There he rose to captain and company commander in mid-March 1786 . Promoted to major on January 20, 1790 , Hamberger was given command of the regiment on October 15, 1797 . On June 29, 1798, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on June 26, 1799 to colonel. On the occasion of a review , King Friedrich Wilhelm III. him on June 7, 1802 with the order Pour le Mérite from.

During the Fourth Coalition War , the king installed him on November 6, 1806 as interim commandant of Danzig . Hamberger was commissioned to defend the fortress of Danzig down to the last man against the French together with Lieutenant General von Manstein . Because of his achievements and his commitment, he was promoted to major general on December 2, 1806. In addition, the king appointed him on January 28, 1807 chief of the infantry regiment "von Reinhart" . After the fortress fell at the end of May 1807, Hamberger was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle for his courage and determination in defending the Hagelsberg . He was also granted leave until further notice.

After his death on July 4th, 1811, Hamberger was buried in St. Annen near Elbing.

He married on August 29, 1783 in Königsberg Johanna Albertine Wilhelmine von Syburg, divorced von Wegnern (* April 20, 1740; † May 12, 1790). She was the daughter of the Prussian major general Friedrich Wilhelm von Syburg (1709–1770).
