Hermann Johann Ernst von Manstein (born November 11, 1742 in Laacht near Reval , † August 25, 1808 in Erthsweide, West Prussia ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , chief of Infantry Regiment No. 55 and governor of Danzig .

Hermann Johann Ernst was the son of Christoph Hermann von Manstein (born September 1, 1711 in Saint Petersburg ; † June 27, 1757 at Welemin ), Prussian major general and his wife Christiane Juliane von Fink (born May 9, 1723; † November 2 1767 in Braunschweig ).

Military career

Manstein was educated first in Saint Petersburg , later in the Figuierschen Pension in Berlin and was the playmate of the future King Friedrich Wilhelm II. He came in 1756 in the Seven Years' War as an ensign in his father's regiment S53 and took part in the battles near Prague , Kolin and Kunersdorf part. He was taken prisoner in the Battle of Maxen , but was soon exchanged again. At Welmina - where his father fell - he himself was taken prisoner. He was transferred to the “Fink” infantry regiment No. 12 and promoted to secondary lieutenant in 1759 , despite the ongoing imprisonment from which he was only released in 1763. In 1764 he was quartermaster lieutenant in Potsdam , in 1770 he was transferred to the infantry regiment "von Ploetz" No. 22 as prime lieutenant . Manstein thus took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession . In the battle of Weißkirch he acquired the Pour le Mérite . In 1780 he became a staff captain and in 1783 a captain and company commander . In 1787 he was transferred to the 1st Department of the Upper War College as an assessor . There Manstein became a member of the Möllendorf Commission in 1788 to reorganize the cantonal system . In 1790 he became a lieutenant colonel and adjutant general of the infantry. As such, he accompanied King Friedrich Wilhelm II during the First Coalition War in the cannonade of Valmy and the siege of Mainz . In 1793 he was promoted to colonel and as such took part in the campaign in Poland in 1794. In the same year, he was promoted to major general . In 1794 he also became director of the 1st department of the Oberkriegskolleg with a salary of 3500 thalers . Due to differences of opinion with Hans Rudolf von Bischoffwerder , he fell out of favor with the king. On November 1, 1796, he became chief of the "von Holwede" infantry regiment No. 55. In May 1801, he was promoted to lieutenant general. In 1805 he became governor of Danzig and Weichselmünde .

During the siege of Danzig by the French, he broke his leg on February 24, 1807 and handed the defense over to Friedrich Adolf von Kalckreuth . He was officially retired on August 2, 1807.

Manstein had married on June 19, 1776 in Stargard Anna Dorothea Helene von Perbandt (* December 27, 1748 in Ückermünde ; † December 17, 1828 in Gnadenfrei ). The following children were born from the marriage:
