Kaspar Ernst von Schultze (born October 18, 1691 in Berlin ; † December 2, 1757 in Breslau ) was the royal Prussian lieutenant general of the infantry, commander of Breslau and director of the royal knight academy in Liegnitz . He was also the hereditary lord of the Mahlen estate in the Silesian district of Trebnitz .

Life

His father was already in the military. He first attended the Joachimsthaler Gymnasium in Berlin and then the universities of Halle , Jena and Wittenberg . There he probably worked primarily with military science.

The then head of the artillery , Margrave Albrecht Friedrich zu Brandenburg-Schwedt , recognized his talent, so he joined the artillery corps in 1707. He was also noticed by the later King Friedrich Wilhelm I , who made him a non-commissioned officer in the body regiment . With this he fought in the War of the Spanish Succession . These were in particular the battle of Malplaquet in 1709 and the siege of Bouchain in 1711 .

On January 13, 1714 he became an ensign in Infantry Regiment No. 2 ( Jung-Dönhoff ). In the Pomeranian campaign of 1715/1716 he fought off Stralsund and became a lieutenant on January 28, 1716. On January 3, 1723 he became a staff captain in Infantry Regiment No. 28 (Mosel) and on June 5, 1723 he got his own company. On July 20, 1730 he was appointed governor of Fischhausen (Prussia).

In 1732 he became his boss, then Crown Prince Friedrich . On July 25, 1738 he was promoted to major, and when King Friedrich set up his bodyguard , Schultze became lieutenant colonel in the first battalion. He fought with the life guards on April 10, 1741 in the Battle of Mollwitz , when he was hit by a bullet that killed his horse. On May 18, 1743 he became a colonel and shortly thereafter commander of the first and second battalions of the Life Guard. When the Second Silesian War broke out, he became the commander of Meissen . On May 30, 1747 he was appointed major general, commander of Breslau and supervisor of the Knights' Academy of Liegnitz. In the same year he received the 29th Infantry Regiment .

In 1748 the king appointed him chief of the Wroclaw Servis Commission . He stood out there for his righteousness, as he tried to balance the interests of soldiers and citizens. Even with the outbreak of the Seven Years' War he initially stayed in Breslau and was appointed lieutenant general in March 1757. During the Battle of Breslau on November 22, 1757, he led a brigade. He was badly injured from a shot in the left chest, but remained on his horse until he was shot. He mounted a new horse and five more horses. At the urging of Prince Ferdinand, he was then taken to his home in Breslau. The bullet was removed there, but he died of his injuries on December 2, 1757.

He was buried in the Reformed Church in Wroclaw without much pomp, but with the enthusiastic sympathy of the population .

Schultze was a well-traveled man. He spoke Latin, French, Italian and some Spanish. He was also on the road several times in these countries on royal commission and had toured Germany. He was also a recruiter in 1740 and was able to recruit more than 50 officers from the Nuremberg-Schweinfurt area. He is said to have found more than 4,000 recruits for the Prussian army.

His name was immortalized in 1851 on one of the plaques on the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great .

For his services, he and his stepbrother, then Lieutenant Friedrich Böning von Schulze, were raised to the nobility on July 21, 1732 . His brother died in 1786 as a retired colonel in Infantry Regiment No. 5 .
