Johann Wilhelm von Ernest

Johann Wilhelm von Ernest (born June 17, 1741 in Bern , † January 26, 1817 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general , chief of the fusilier battalion No. 19 and most recently a brigadier of the Westphalian fusilier brigade.

Life

origin

His parents were Beat Ludwig von Ernest (* March 20, 1694; † August 19, 1749) and his wife Marie, born von Fels (* October 19, 1709; † October 1793). His father was a country doctor in Milden (Canton Vaud) and a sovereign councilor in Bern. One brother became a French general.

Military career

Ernest was initially in English service and took part in the siege of Gibraltar in 1760 . He then switched to Dutch services and on January 1, 1770, he was second lieutenant in the Dutch Swiss Guard. In 1774 he went into Austrian service, where he was promoted to captain in 1778 . Ernest also took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79. On December 27, 1784 he was in the service of Brunswick, where he served as a major . There he received his resignation on September 4, 1785 . Ernest now switched to Prussian service and came on December 17, 1786 as a major in the light infantry regiment "von Andolfingen". After the regiment was dissolved, on June 17, 1787 he was appointed chief of the 19 fusilier regiment. In the First Coalition War , Ernest fought in the siege of Verdun and the battle of Trippstadt. In the time he was on January 5, 1793 Lieutenant Colonel and on January 7, 1795 Colonel . In addition, on June 7, 1794, he received the order Pour le Mérite for his services at Trippstadt.

On January 13, 1798 he was appointed brigadier of the Magdeburg Fusilier Brigade and on May 20, 1800 he was promoted to major general with a patent from May 29, 1800. On February 19, 1803 he was transferred as a brigadier to the Westphalian Fusilier Brigade. After the defeat of the Prussian Army by France, Ernest was put on half pay from November 27, 1807 , but it was not until September 2, 1813 that he received his departure with a pension of 800 thalers. He died on January 26, 1817 in Berlin and was buried in the Invalidenfriedhof .

Ernest married Charlotte Resewitz on March 22, 1789 in Magdeburg (* June 26, 1763; † September 22, 1833). She was a daughter of the general superintendent of the Duchy of Magdeburg Friedrich Gabriel Resewitz . The couple had at least one son:
