Johann Freiherr von Hinrichs (born November 3, 1752 in Hamburg , † November 15, 1834 in Stargard ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

After attending the academic high school in Hamburg, Hinrichs enrolled at the University of Göttingen . In 1774 he joined as a lieutenant in the Kurhessische army and took 1776/83 on the American Revolutionary War in part. After his return he took his leave in 1786 and was employed as captain and company commander in the light infantry regiment "Chaumontet" of the Prussian army . In the following year Hinrichs became commander of the fusilier battalion "von Wallbrunn". On June 29, 1788, the king appointed him head of the battalion , which from that point on bore his name. In 1794/95, Hinrichs led his troops during the campaign in Poland . In the battle near Labishin he was wounded and awarded the order Pour le Mérite for his achievements . His battalion had been garrisoned in Łowicz , the new Prussian province of South Prussia , since 1795 . Later it became part of the 1st Warsaw Fusilier Brigade. In May 1801 Hinrichs was promoted to major general . During the war against France in 1806 he was seriously wounded in the battle near Halle / Saale by a saber cut in the neck and a bayonet stab in the chest. He got into French captivity, from which he returned in the autumn of 1807.

After the Peace of Tilsit , Hinrichs was given half pay with the prospect of re- employment and spent his time in Riesenburg. The king did not comply with his repeated request for reinstatement, but granted him a salary . Only after the wars of liberation began , Hinrichs received an active command on May 5, 1813, and was appointed head of the Neumark Landwehr Division and commander of the Küstrin blockade corps . After the surrender of the French occupation troops, he was commander of the fortress on March 18, 1814 and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. A memorial stone was erected in Küstrin in his honor and in memory of the liberation. The king approved his departure on October 3, 1815, conferring the character of lieutenant general and a pension of 1,500 thalers . In recognition of his services, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, on September 10, 1834 .

Hinrichs was a Freemason and “Old Scottish Delegated Head Master” in the Lodge in Plock and an honorary member of the Masonic Lodge in Halle (Saale) .
