Gerhard Alexander von Saß

Gerhard Alexander Freiherr von Saß (born October 12, 1718 in Groß-Buschdorf ( Buschhof ) in Courland ; † July 17, 1790 ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , chief of garrison regiment No. 6 , commander of the Cosel fortress and heir to Groß Ellguth , Gieraltowitz , Stubendorf and Tschammer Ellguth .

Life

origin

Gerhard came from the Baltic noble family von Saß . His parents were captain Gerhard von Saß († 1735), heir to Brüggen and Kummelen, and his wife Margarethe, née von Plater († 1771) from the Istitz family.

Military career

In 1732, Saß started attending a grammar school in Mitau . In 1734 he moved to the University of Königsberg , where he stayed for a year. In 1736, Saß entered Prussian service and joined the "Schwerin" infantry regiment . It was there that he got to know the then Crown Prince Friedrich , for whom he later carried out some secret missions. On September 27, 1740 he became an ensign . During the battle of Mollwitz he received two serious injuries. He was hit by a musket ball and a grape ball shattered his left leg. He was carried off the battlefield seemingly dead, but he was slowly recovering, but lived in pain the rest of his life. On August 6, 1741, Saß became second lieutenant and on January 18, 1743, he was given his own company as captain (out of turn) in the “Anhalt” fusilier regiment . On August 1, 1744, he was transferred to the "Salder" garrison regiment in Cosel . When the fortress surrendered to the Austrians in 1745, he too was taken prisoner and was later exchanged.

On October 7, 1747 he became a major . On November 30, 1751, he bought the Britzlawiz estate and received the Silesian Inkolat . On July 1, 1756, Saß became lieutenant colonel and on July 20, 1756, commandant of Brieg . On December 4, 1760 he was promoted to colonel and became commander of the "Lattorf" garrison regiment. On April 4, 1762 he became head of the regiment and real commanding officer.

On September 27, 1766 he was accepted into the Order of St. John and assigned to the Commandery of Süpplingenburg . On August 23, 1767 he received the order Pour le Mérite from King Friedrich II . On August 21, 1772, Saß received confirmation of the title of baron for his sex while being promoted to major general . On September 1, 1772 he was also made a knight of the Order of St. John. King Friedrich Wilhelm II appointed him lieutenant general on May 19, 1787. In the same year the garrison regiment was converted into a depot battalion .

family

Saß married on December 2, 1750 Helena Eleonore Benignen von Larisch (1737–1795) from the Gieraltowitz family. The couple had seven sons and three daughters, including:
