Life

Franz Adolf was a son of Prince Viktor I of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym (1693–1772) from his first marriage to Charlotte Luise (1680–1739), daughter of Count Wilhelm Moritz zu Isenburg and Büdingen in Birstein . Until the birth of his nephew in 1767, Franz Adolf was Presumptive Prince of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym.

In Prussian service, Franz Adolf took part in the Silesian campaigns with distinction. In 1759 he became chief of the Kahlden regiment on foot . In 1771 he became lieutenant general of the infantry. He was the bearer of the Black Eagle Order .

Marriage and offspring

Franz Adolf married on October 19, 1762 in Nieder-Kauffung in Silesia (today Wojcieszów ) with Maria Josepha (1741–1785), daughter of Count Johann Wolfgang von Hasslingen and Ernestina nee. Baron von Kottwitz from the noble family who was raised to the rank of imperial count by the emperor. Because of the unequal marriage, the brothers Franz Adolfs brought a lawsuit at the Reichshofrat , invoking the house law passed in 1756 that excluded the lower nobility from being equal. Without a judgment, the Reichshofrat dismissed the complaint and recommended an amicable settlement. Franz Adolf turned to the Prussian king in this matter , who refused the request with the note “Stinkent Fet und Schmirige buter - ne Finke”. Franz Adolf had the following children from his marriage:

⚭ 1790 Karoline Westarp (1773–1818), “Countess of Westarp” 1798
  • Viktoria Amalie Ernestine (1772-1817)
⚭ 1. 1791 Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Philippsthal (1757–1793)
⚭ 2. 1796 Count Franz Karl Eduard von Wimpffen (1776–1842)
  • Adolf Karl Albrecht (1773–1776)
  • Leopold Ludwig (1775–1776)
  • Marie Henriette (1779–1780)
