Alexander von Dönhoff

Alexander Graf von Dönhoff (born February 9, 1683 in Königsberg , † October 9, 1742 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and confidante of King Friedrich Wilhelm I.

Life

Count Alexander came from the Dönhoff family and was the son of Friedrich von Dönhoff and Eleonore Katharina Freiin von Schwerin . He became an ensign in the Brandenburg service on November 30, 1699 . Then he went to Hessen-Kassel , where he became captain in 1701 and took part in the War of the Spanish Succession against France. In 1704 he became major , on February 9, 1705 lieutenant colonel and fought in northern Italy in 1706 and 1707. He became adjutant general of the Hereditary Prince Friedrich von Hessen-Kassel . On December 27, 1709, he was given his own regiment as a colonel and in 1720 became major general in Hesse . On July 13, 1722 he was major general in the Prussian service and on September 10, head of a regiment on foot (1806: No. 13). In the trial against the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich and Hans Hermann von Katte in 1730 he was a member of the court martial . In 1734 he began building the Dönhoffplatz in Berlin, which was later named after him . In 1734 and 1735 he took part in the campaign on the Rhine and was promoted to lieutenant general on June 7, 1737. On June 24, 1740 he retired from active service.

family

On October 31, 1720 he married Countess Charlotte von Blumenthal († September 28, 1761 in Berlin; daughter of Count Adam Ludwig, Prussian colonel and chamberlain), with whom he had two sons and three daughters. His son Friedrich Ludwig von Dönhoff (* February 10, 1724, † June 19, 1778) was also major general, but in Austria. The Beynuhnen house in Prussia and Austria founded by Count Alexander expires in 1838 with his grandson and in 1888 with his daughters. The couple also had the following children:
