Rudolph August von Hoffmann

Rudolph August von Hoffmann (* 1700 in Walbeck near Halberstadt ; † September 5, 1759 in Dresden ) was a royal Prussian colonel and chief of the Fusilier Regiment No. 44 .

Life

He entered Prussian service as a cadet in 1714. Under King Friedrich Wilhelm I , he was transferred to Regiment No. 21 (Jung-Dönhof). He became Premier Lieutenant there on November 27, 1725. In 1735 he was released because of a duel with a captain von Grumbkow . Hoffmann then went into Austrian service. But when Friedrich II became king in 1740 , he brought him back and gave him a company in the new regiment No. 39 (Braunschweig). In 1744 he marched into the Second Silesian War and was appointed major on November 14, 1744. In April 1745 he was captured by Austria, but was soon exchanged again.

Between the wars on September 12, 1753, he became a lieutenant colonel. With the beginning of the Seven Years' War he became a colonel in February 1757. In 1759 he received regiment No. 44 (Jungken). He fought with his regiment in Saxony and especially during the siege of Dresden by the Austrians. Shortly before the city was surrendered, he had a heated argument with Captain Christian David von Sydow . The captain stood guard and ordered his men to shoot the colonel. He was badly hit in the body and arm and died of his injuries on September 5, 1759.

He was married. His daughter Marie Elisabeth von Hoffmann (1728–1805) was married to Johann Friedrich von Hirschfeld (1711–1757), their son Karl Friedrich von Hirschfeld also became a Prussian general.
