Erhard Gustav von Wedel

Count Erhard Gustav von Wedel (also: Wedel-Jarlsberg , born March 22, 1756 in Evenburg near Leer ; † February 8, 1813 in Dresden ) was royal Prussian , then Dutch major general and finally imperial French général de brigade and brigade commander of the Grande Army , Commander of Toruń Fortress and Governor of Łomża .

His brother Georg Clemens August von Wedel (1754-1825) was President of the East Frisian Landscape from 1779 to 1788 .

Life

He matriculated on April 4, 1776 as a student at the University of Halle . But on May 11, 1786 he went into Prussian service, where he came to the Free Regiment Müller von Andolfingen as Premier-Lieutenant and was promoted to Staff Captain on October 8, 1786. With the dissolution of the free regiments, he was transferred to Fusilier Battalion No. 18 on June 1, 1787. On September 26, 1787, he became a captain and company commander. In the First Coalition War he fought in the cannonade near Valmy , the siege of Landau, the battle of Kaiserslautern and the battles of Bingen, Rainberg, Wachenheim, Edenlaben and Deidesheim. He was wounded in Rainberg. During that time he was promoted to major on February 19, 1793 and transferred to the Fusilier Battalion No. 2 on March 14, 1793. For Diedesheim he also received the Pour le Mérite on June 7, 1794 .

After the war he was appointed chief of the fusilier battalion on September 12, 1797 . On June 2, 1802 he became a lieutenant colonel and went on vacation to Denmark on June 25, 1802, initially for three months, but on June 2, 1804, he became a colonel. In the Fourth Coalition War he fought near Auerstedt and took part in the retreat as far as Lübeck , where he was captured during the surrender, but was released on word of honor. On December 28, 1807 he received his resignation , but received on October 31, 1808 the character of a major general.

Then changed into the service of the King of Holland Louis , where he was on November 6, 1809 as major general générale en non-activité . During this time he took up residence in Utrecht . When the Kingdom of Holland was annexed to the French Empire on July 9, 1810, it was taken over as the French Général de brigade. In 1811 he was transferred by Napoleon as governor to the fortress Zara in Dalmatia and immediately afterwards as brigade commander to Turin under the supreme command of the Viceroy of Italy Eugène de Beauharnais . During the campaign of 1812 in Russia he led a brigade and later was the commandant of the Toruń Fortress and governor in Łomża . However, he had overexerted himself in the campaign and died while retreating on February 8, 1813 in Dresden.

He married on May 20, 1789 in Magdeburg Johanna Christine Wilhelmine von Goetz (* August 25, 1772; † September 2, 1840), a daughter of Colonel Johann Friedrich von Goetz and Katharina Wilhelmine Luise von Stilcke . The couple had the following children:
