Friedrich Wilhelm von Gaudi
Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Freiherr von Gaudi (Gaudy) (born August 23, 1725 in Spandau , † December 13, 1788 in Wesel ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .
Life
origin
Gaudi came from a noble family, originally Scottish , who served the Brandenburg princes well for more than 100 years. He was a son of the Prussian Colonel Andreas Erhard von Gaudi († 1745), who fell in battle near Habelschwerdt , and his wife Maria Elisabeth, née von Graevenitz . His brother Carl Friedrich Ludwig von Gaudi was the director of the War and Domain Chamber in Bromberg and his brother Leopold Otto von Gaudi was head of the department for East and West Prussia.
Career
He initially studied in Königsberg and in 1744 joined the infantry regiment of Prince Heinrich of Prussia . Gaudi took part in the siege of Prague during the Second Silesian War and took part in the retreat to Silesia . After that he was assigned to recruit soldiers. In 1750 he became lieutenant commander and was promoted to captain and wing adjutant of King Frederick the Great by 1756 . As such, he took part in the battles near Prague , Kolin , Roßbach and Leuthen in the Seven Years' War . In the course of the war he was assigned to Zieten und Hülsen as chief of staff and councilor in higher military affairs. In 1760 Gaudi was able to prove himself at Liegnitz (Strehlen), for which he was awarded the order Pour le Mérite and promoted to major . On March 1, 1763 he became the commander of a fusilier regiment in Wesel. In 1767 he became lieutenant colonel and in 1770 commander of the "Hessen-Kassel" infantry regiment . In 1771 he was promoted to colonel. On June 19, 1779 he was appointed major general and regiment chief of the infantry regiment "von Brietzke" .
In 1778 he was supposed to take part in the War of the Bavarian Succession , but fell on his horse near Hildesheim and broke his leg. In 1785 he was appointed inspector of the regiments in Westphalia, promoted to lieutenant general on May 20, 1787, and appointed governor of the Wesel Citadel in June . On September 13, 1787, he commanded a unit of Prussia that was sent to the Netherlands to fight local unrest. Gaudi was able to accomplish his task without much bloodshed.
A diary kept by Gaudi during the war and kept as a manuscript in the war archives of the General Staff cannot be regarded as an authoritative source, even if it was used a lot in the past. Gaudi sometimes appears one-sided in it, after he had entered into certain contradictions to the king.
Friedrich Wilhelm von Gaudi died on December 13, 1788 as governor of the Wesel Citadel.
family
He was married to Wilhelmine Sophia Charlotte von Hake (1735–1815) from the Groß-Kreutz house since 1763 . She was the widow of Major Wilhelm Ernst von Buddenbrock . The couple had a daughter: Wilhelmine Sophie Elisabeth (1765–1840), who married Clemens-August von Wedel (1754–1825) on August 23, 1781 in East Frisia .
