Jacques L'Aumonier
Jacques L'Aumonier , Marquis of Varenne (* 1641 Faux near Reims ; † December 2, 1717 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , head of the "Varenne on foot" regiment and governor of the Peitz fortress .
Life
family
He comes from an important family. His parents were the French lieutenant general Jacques de Varennes and his wife Marthe du Fay.
Military career
The French King Louis XIV was his godfather and he was appointed captain of a company at the cradle . By 1685 he rose to lieutenant colonel. But with the repeal of the Edict of Nantes he had to leave France and first came to Frankfurt am Main with other officers - including his son . There he was accepted as a colonel in the army of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm . So he came to Berlin in March 1686 of the year and was commissioned to set up a regiment with 16 companies made up of French migrants.
He soon had eight companies of 50 men each in Soest . They formed the 1st battalion of the regiment. Eight more companies were soon enlisted and formed the 2nd battalion. There was also a company of cadets. So it came about that in his regiment "Varenne on foot" not only the officers were French refugees, but also almost all of the ordinary soldiers. When Elector Friedrich Wilhelm was buried on September 12, 1688, the Marquis Varenne was the standard bearer for the Duchy of Prussia . The successor to Elector Friedrich I appointed him major general in 1690 .
In 1701 the regiment went into Dutch service. It fought in Flanders . On March 31, 1703 he was promoted to lieutenant general and fought at Höchstädt . In 1705 he asked permission to go into Venetian services, but the elector refused. The regiment was able to distinguish itself in the bloody battle of Malplaquet . In 1715 he gave up his regiment for reasons of age and became governor of the Peitz fortress. He died in Berlin in 1717.
family
He was married several times. His first wife was Anna-Henriette d'Orthe, whom he married on April 27, 1665. He had several children with her but got divorced around 1693 in a sensational process. Then he was married to Maria Isabelle von Vehlen (born January 24, 1660), but the marriage was not recognized. The couple had a son and several daughters, including:
- Friedrich Wilhelm (1698–1744) ⚭ 1721 Sabine Luise von Rochow (1699–1756)

- ↑ in Tolin: history of the French colony is Luise von Rochow mentioned as a third wife. But nothing of this can be found in the Rochow family records. She was married to his son, probably a mix-up.
