Heinrich Karl Ludwig de Herault Seigneur de Hautcharmoy (* 1689 in Wesel ; † May 11, 1757 in Margaret Monastery near Prague ) was a Prussian Lieutenant General of the Infantry , Knight of the Black Eagle Order and Commander of Brieg .

Life

His family comes from France, from where they fled in 1689. His father, Samuel de Herault, died as an English lieutenant colonel and adjutant to Marshal Schomberg . Both died in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 . His mother gave birth to him as her 14th child while on the run in Wesel.

After a difficult childhood he joined the Berlin Cadet Corps and was sent to the War of the Spanish Succession around 1706 with a Prussian contingent of 8,000 men . He fought in Italy as an infantryman in the relief of Turin , the storming of the Milanese castle, the siege of Toulon , the conquest of Susa, the battle of Calcinato and the storming of Capri and Regio.

From 1708 to 1711 he was in the Netherlands. He distinguished himself from the siege of Lille (Ryssel) and Gent , so that on January 17, 1709 the king was ensigned in the battalion "von der Heyden". On September 20th he got the job of an engineer (conductor). In 1709 he took part in the conquest of Doornik (Tournay), the battle of Malplaquet and the conquest of Mons. In 1710 he fought at Douai and Aire and in 1711 at Bouchain. On April 20, 1711 he became second lieutenant .

1713 brought in Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau into the infantry regiment "Wartensleben" . On November 26, 1715 he became a prime lieutenant . In the Pomeranian campaign of 1715/1716 he took part in the siege of Stralsund and the landing on Rügen. There he already served as an adjutant. On November 17, 1717 he became a staff captain and on December 24, 1718 he became a captain and company commander . On November 18, 1726, he became sergeant-major in succession to Lieutenant Colonel Brandt in Magdeburg. On April 14, 1730, he became lieutenant general quartermaster, and on April 22, he was also governor of Angerburg.

In August 1738 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and took over the regiment of Joachim Ernst von Zimmerow . In 1740 he took over the Kleist infantry regiment . In the First Silesian War he was able to distinguish himself in the battle in Ottmachau , in which he occupied and held a strategically important bridge over the Neisse . He was wounded in the battle of Mollwitz . On June 5, 1741 he became colonel and commandant of Brieg . On January 30, 1742 he took over the Infantry Regiment No. 28 and was appointed major general on May 27, 1743 . In 1744 he fought under General Heinrich Karl von der Marwitz in Upper Silesia and was able to conquer the Cosel fortress on September 5, 1744 . On September 8, 1753 he was appointed lieutenant general, and he was knighted by the Order of the Black Eagle .

Friedrich II. Rewarded the achievements and after the Silesian wars he was rewarded in 1746 with Präbende zu Kalkar. In 1748 he received an extra salary of 600 thalers, in 1752 the Silesian manor Allerheiligen and in December 1754 even the fiefdom Adelstädt in Halberstädtschen.

In the Seven Years' War , his horse was shot and injured during the Battle of Prague . He was taken to the Margaret Monastery near Prague, where he died of his wounds eleven days after the battle. He was buried there too.

Prince Heinrich of Prussia dedicated a plaque on his Rheinsberg obelisk to him . For his work, his name was also immortalized in 1851 on one of the plaques on the equestrian statue of Frederick the Great .

His first wife was Maria Henriette von Schillig, whom he married on July 17, 1714. The couple had two daughters:

His second wife was Dorothea Wilhelmine von Aching († March 31, 1786 in Oels), sister of General Friedrich Hannibal von Schmertzing , whom he married on July 10, 1735. The couple had two sons and four daughters:
