Johann Georg Ferdinand von Damm (born March 3, 1717 in Soest ; † July 18, 1797 in Stettin ) was a Prussian major general , commander of the fortress Stettin and official governor of Tangermünde .

The von Damm family belonged to the Brunswick city ​​nobility. His parents were the mayor of Soest Friedrich Kurt von Damm (* February 14, 1672; † December 16, 1740) and his wife Anname Maria Eleonore, née Schmithaufen called Schmitz (* June 22, 1684; † August 9, 1755), Daughter of the Grand Judge Arnold Willebrand von Schmitz.

Military career

In 1736, Damm joined the infantry regiment “von der Mosel” in Wesel as a private corporal . He was born on December 2, 1738 Ensign and on June 30, 1740 second lieutenant . During the First Silesian War , the regiment was commanded to occupy Brieg in 1741 . In the Second Silesian War Damm fought in the Battle of Hohenfriedberg and took part in the siege of Cosel . On May 30, 1749 he was promoted to Prime Lieutenant. On October 8, 1753 he was given leave by the king to take care of his family affairs, and on July 11, 1756 he was made captain of the staff .

During the Seven Years' War he was badly wounded in the Battle of Prague , lost a foot and was ill for a long time. Damm returned and became captain and company commander on May 22, 1757 . After the war he became major on September 11, 1764 . On June 4, 1770 he was appointed regimental commander. On June 21, 1773 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on August 21, 1776 he received the order Pour le Mérite . Damm took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession and was promoted to colonel shortly thereafter on November 24, 1778 .

On April 11, 1780 he was transferred to the infantry regiment "von Pfuhl" as a commander, in the same year he was also appointed governor of Tangermünde by the king. In addition, on May 14, 1781 he received the fiefdom of Asseln (Havemannscher Hof) in the Unna (Westphalia) office, which corresponded to a value of approx. On January 23, 1783, he was transferred to the fortress of Stettin as a commandant , which brought him a tract of 600 thalers, and he was also allowed to keep the administration. On May 22, 1783, he was promoted to major general with a patent from May 21, 1783. He died on July 18, 1797 in Stettin and was buried on July 22, 1797 in Kloxin (Pyritz district). Shortly before, he had bought the estate from Otto Friedrich Ludwig von Schack for 61,000 thalers.

Damm married on January 5, 1767 in Oels Karoline Leopoldine Marie Herault de Hautcharmoy (* October 12, 1738; † July 12, 1815), first lady-in-waiting of the Duchess of Württemberg and daughter of Lieutenant General Heinrich Karl Ludwig Herault de Hautcharmoy . The couple had several children including:
