Johann Adolph von Nassau-Usingen (born July 19, 1740 in Biebrich , † December 10, 1793 in Wiesbaden ) was a prince of Nassau-Usingen , Count of Saarbrücken and Saar Werden , Lord of Lahr , Wiesbaden and Idstein . He was a French colonel , as well as a Prussian lieutenant general and chief of the Fusilier Regiment No. 47 .

Life

origin

He was the son of the ruling Prince Karl von Nassau-Usingen and his wife Christiane Wilhelmine von Sachsen-Eisenach (1711–1740), who died four months after his birth.

Career

In 1749 he went to the Netherlands with his older brothers . There he stayed for three years for training in Utrecht . In 1752 he entered French services and became a colonel. There he received the Count von Fersen's infantry regiment . In 1758 he exchanged it for the Nassau-Saarbrücken Cavalry Regiment .

During the Seven Years' War he was with the French troops in Germany from 1757 to 1761. He was present in the battles near Hastenbeck , Sandershausen , Lutterberg , Bergen and Minden , also in the siege of Kassel and Wolfenbüttel, as well as in the battles of Grüneberg and Amöneburg. He was hit in the left shoulder in the Battle of Sandershausen.

In 1760 he received the order Pour le Mérite militaire , in 1761 he was brigadier of the cavalry and in 1762 Maréchal de camp . In 1763 he received the Palatine Order of Hubertus .

In 1764 he changed to Prussian service under Friedrich II. He became major general and received the Fusilier Regiment No. 47 (Grabow). In the War of the Bavarian Succession he was assigned to Prince Heinrich's army. On January 11, 1777 he became lieutenant general. He was accused of embezzling army funds, whereupon he indignantly resigned from service on November 25, 1778.
