List of the Electoral Saxon regiments of the early modern period

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The present list of regiments from the early modern period ends with the end of the Electorate of Saxony on December 11, 1806. There was no turning point, as the Brandenburg-Prussian army experienced due to its surrender in 1806. Most of the regiments continued the tradition of the regiments of the early modern period within the Napoleonic Rhine Confederation . Since the 16th century a large number of temporary regiments have been set up, mostly on the occasion of campaigns. They are not yet part of this overview.

Explanation of the system

A master list and numbering of the infantry regiments of the Electoral Saxon army was not introduced. The designation was based on the name of the regiment owner . The list below includes the regiments that existed in the long term in the order in which they were formed and named after Bleckwenn . In addition, the year of foundation has been added to the list below. This is intended to facilitate comparability. This numbering consistently follows the Ticino line-ups . If several regiments were founded in one year, Ticino added a second number (e.g. "1756/2" = second Electoral Saxon regiment that was set up in 1756). This is followed by the names of the regiment chiefs or the name (possibly name of the commander).

Meaning of the characters used: "*" = foundation, "†" = dissolution, ">" = whereabouts, "=" = double function as a standing regiment of an imperial estate.

Infantry regiments

At the beginning of the Seven Years' War , most of the Saxon regiments had to capitulate to Prussia near Pirna in 1757 . The attempt to take over regiments in the Prussian army failed across the board. Most of the soldiers deserted. As a result, the troops could be set up in new formations. They fought primarily with the French army in West Germany against the Allies .
