The Grenadier Regiment "King Frederick I" (fourth Ostpreußisches) No. 5 was an infantry joined the Prussian army .

history

The regiment was founded on March 11, 1689 and was subordinate to the 1st Army Corps from 1820 to 1848 and from 1851 to 1890 . From 1849 to 1850 it was part of the V Army Corps and from 1890 to 1914 part of the XVII. Army Corps . During this time it belonged to the 2nd Division (1820-1848, 1852-1890), the 10th Division (1849-1850) and the 36th Division (1890-1914). It belonged to the 2nd Infantry Brigade (1820-1848, 1851), the 10th Infantry Brigade (1849-1850), the 4th Infantry Brigade (1852-1890) and the 71st Infantry Brigade (1890-1914 ) on.

On March 11, 1689, the regiment was founded by surrender by Frederick I under the leadership of Alexander zu Dohna-Schlobitten - with a battalion on foot of five companies . These companies consisted of two companies of the Old Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 10 , a company from Heinrich de Briquemault's battalion and two companies from different fortress garrisons. In the same year the regiment was enlarged to eight companies, including three companies from the Old Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 10.

In 1691 the regiment received a second battalion of five companies because it was supposed to take part in the Turkish Wars.

Alexander zu Dohna-Schlobitten became governor of Pillau and colonel of the garrison there in 1692 , he gave three companies to Wilhelm von Brandt , the previous governor of Pillau, and incorporated the three companies located in Pillau into his regiment. As a result, one battalion of the regiment permanently formed the garrison of Pillau and thus assumed the character of a garrison ; the strength of both battalions changed depending on the political situation until 1713.

In 1702 a company was transferred to the von Sydow Regiment, which was replaced in 1703. At the beginning of 1713 Friedrich Wilhelm I raised the garrisons as such and turned them into field troops. The strength of this regiment, like that of most of the others, is made up of two battalions of five companies each.

In 1735 the regiment was reorganized: The grenadiers previously distributed among the companies were merged into two companies, the regiment now consisted of two battalions of one grenadier and five musketeer companies each. In the event of mobilization, the grenadier companies were drawn together to form a grenadier battalion.

In 1787 two musketeer companies were converted into grenadier companies, so that the regiment consisted of one grenadier and two musketeer battalions of four companies each.

In 1797 soldiers were withdrawn to form Regiment No. 7 . 1807 was the regiment the III. 4th battalion of regiment No. 4 and the fusilier battalion of regiment No. 23 incorporated. This gave it the required level of two grenadier companies, two musketeers and a light battalion.

In 1859 heavy deliveries were made to Regiment No. 45 , including to officers . Further deliveries followed in 1866 (13th, 14th and 15th company to regiment No. 74 ), 1881 (10th company to regiment No. 128 ), 1887 (2nd company to regiment No. 135 ) and 1897 ( 4th Battalion to Regiment No. 176 ).
