His family wanted him to become a lawyer and came to Marburg to study . But already in 1744 he went into Dutch service. Through the mediation of relatives, he soon became an ensign and joined the Prinz Stollberg regiment . There he rose to lieutenant . But the Dutch service was very calm and the looming Seven Years War offered new opportunities. He resigned and went into Prussian service. On October 30, 1755 he came to the Le Noble Free Battalion as Premier Lieutenant . On May 1, 1758, he received his own company. On October 1, 1762 he also became a major . During that time he took part in numerous battles. In one of these skirmishes he was hit by a bullet that got stuck in the lid of his silver snuffbox .
