Georg von Steensen

Georg von Steensen (born April 6, 1734 in Avensberg (also: Avnsbjærg or Aunsbjerg) near Viborg ; † July 3, 1812 in Neisse ) was a Prussian lieutenant general , chief of infantry regiment No. 50 and governor of the Neisse fortress .

Life

origin

He comes from Avensberg, a noble seat in the province of North Jutland , Amt Standerberg near Viborg, in Denmark. His parents were the heir of Avensberg and Kommerzienrat Steen Jörgensen (* 1677; † November 30, 1754) and his wife Marie Cathrine Balslev (* May 5, 1703; † September 1744). His older brother was the royal Danish State Councilor Steen Steensen. The Danish poet Steen Steensen Blicher was his nephew.

Military career

On August 19, 1757 he became a Sous-lieutenant in the French Régiment de Royal Deux-Ponts . During the Seven Years' War he fought against the Prussians near Roßbach , in the battle near Lutterberg and near Sangerhausen (where he received an award). On March 2, 1759 he became captain and company commander of the Württemberg infantry regiment "Prince Wilhelm". On January 1, 1761 he was company commander in the grenadier battalion "von Bode" and on July 30, 1762 major in the grenadier battalion "von Harnach". On May 22, 1765, he took leave of the Württemberg service.

Steensen came on November 14, 1766 as a major in Prussian service and in 1772 was in the newly established "Rossiers" regiment in Silberberg . On January 1, 1773, he became chief of the battalion's musketeer company . On June 23, 1775 he became lieutenant colonel and on February 25, 1778 commander of the battalion. He then took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession and rose to colonel on June 22, 1779 and major general on May 20, 1787 . On September 4, 1788, he received an allowance of 600 thalers. Later on July 1, 1794 he became lieutenant general and received another 500 thalers. On December 29, 1795 he was appointed chief of the "Troscheke" battalion. On September 20, 1797, the battalion became infantry regiment No. 50. On September 30, 1799, however, he was appointed governor of the Neisse fortress and had to surrender the regiment. During the Fourth Coalition War , he valiantly defended the fortress against the French, but ultimately had to surrender on June 15th. On June 16, 1807 he was made inactive and died on July 3, 1812 in Neisse.

family

Steensen was married twice. His first wife was Karoline Helene Wilhelmine von Thielau in 1778 (* June 14, 1754; † 1782). After her death, he married her sister Charlotte Sophie Elisabeth von Thielau on October 24, 1786 (* October 10, 1762, † March 10, 1818). He had the following children:
