Philipp Loth from Seers

Philipp Loth von Seers (* 1695 in Herford ; † May 10, 1767 in Berlin ) was a Prussian major general , chief of the engineering corps and commander of the fortress Schweidnitz and knight of the order Pour le Mérite .

He was the son of Major General Peter von Seers .

Military career

Seers started out in Infantry Regiment No. 17 and in 1716 joined the Engineering Corps as a conductor . In 1726 he became captain and in 1734 major . In 1741 he began to fortify Schweidnitz. On January 8, 1742 he became a lieutenant colonel in the newly established "Walrave" pioneer regiment . In 1744, however, he moved into the field with the army in Bohemia. On October 10, 1747 he was promoted to colonel and received the order Pour le Mérite. In 1748 General Walrave was arrested and Seers was appointed head of the regiment in his place. He was a good engineer and had expanded the fortress Schweidnitz, in 1757 he became major general and commander of Schweidnitz. However, the crew consisted of numerous pressed Saxon soldiers and there was a lack of artillerymen. But the fortress was well stocked. After the Prussian defeat in the Battle of Kolin , the Austrians advanced against the fortress and after a six-week siege and the loss of two forts, he surrendered.

On September 11, 1757 he handed the fortress over to Count Franz Leopold von Nádasdy and was taken prisoner. He was exchanged in 1758, then tried before a court martial, sentenced and dismissed.

Seers died in Berlin in 1767.

His first marriage from 1727 to Francoise de St. Laurent and his second marriage from 1761 to Charlotte du Trossel (1728–1774). After the death of her husband, the widow married in December 1773 the colonel in Dutch service Philipp du Ham de Vence.
