Franz Ulrich von Kleist (born February 2, 1688 in Kowalk ; † January 13, 1757 in Dresden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and holder of the Order of the Black Eagle .

Life

He was a son of Georg von Kleist (1640-1720) and Anne Ernestine von Zastrow (1658-1725) from the Wusterhausen family . Von Kleist joined the army at the age of 14. He was assigned to the regiment (Grumbkow) and entered the War of the Spanish Succession in 1703 . There he took part in the battles of Höchstädt (1703) and Schellenberg (1704) . He was part of the siege of Lille (Ryssel) in 1708 . There he was so badly wounded in the foot that they wanted to amputate it. In 1709 he was back in the battle of Malplaquet and in 1710 in the siege of Douay, where he was injured in the shoulder. In the meantime he had risen to lieutenant . With the approval of the Prussian king, he now went into service in the Palatinate in the Zobel regiment. There he became general adjutant to General von Zobel. In 1712 he was promoted to major . After the Peace of Utrecht the Palatinate army was reduced and Kleist was also dismissed (he should be able to stay if he converted to Catholicism, but did not). So he came back to Gut Kowalk. In 1716 he came back to the Prussian army and came to the "Schwendy on foot" regiment . In 1724 he became a Prussian major in the regiment "Margrave Ludwig on foot" , and was also awarded the Order de la Générosité . In 1729 he was assigned to a group of twelve Prussian officers who were to help against insurgents in Corsica on behalf of the king of the army of Genoa . On his return he reports to the king, who takes good note of it. In 1738 he became lieutenant colonel and in 1739 commander of the “Röder on foot” regiment . With this regiment he goes to the first Silesian War . On May 13, 1741 he became a colonel and on May 17, 1742 he fought in the battle of Chotusitz . In 1742 he was awarded the order Pour le Mérite by King Friedrich II . In 1745 he fought under the command of Lehwald in the county of Glatz against the royal Hungarian Austrians . He fought in Habelschwerdt , Hohenfriedberg and Thrush . On December 1, 1745 he was appointed major general and on May 1, 1747 he took over the regiment "Anhalt-Dessau on foot" . In 1756 he was appointed lieutenant general. In the battle of Lobositz he commanded a brigade in the center so boldly that he was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle for it after the battle . All of his captains received the Pour le Mérite . However, he had also received a shot in the calf and had not received treatment. He went to Dresden to cure himself there. There he died of complications on January 13, 1757.
