Ernst Emanuel Sigismund von Schöning (born March 16, 1743 in Lübenow , † August 2, 1823 in Königsberg ) was a Prussian officer , most recently a lieutenant general .

He came from the Pomeranian noble family von Schöning and was the son of Wilhelm Richard von Schöning (* 1709, † 1781), Prussian district administrator of the Soldin district, and his wife Eleonore Sophie, née von Papstein from the Mansfeld house († 1784).

Military career

In 1758 Schöning was employed as a private corporal in the Infantry Regiment "von Kanitz" No. 2 of the Prussian Army . With the regiment he participated during the campaign 1758/63 in the fighting at anger village , Kay and Kunersdorf and has since been on 13 September 1759 Ensign and on June 2, 1762 second lieutenant .

In the further course of his military career Schöning finally became captain and company commander in his regiment on December 29, 1776 . As such, he took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 , but without Schöning being involved in combat operations. On February 2, 1784, he was promoted to major and, as such, after two years, he was appointed battalion commander. Shortly after his promotion to lieutenant colonel on May 20, 1791, he was given command of the grenadier battalion and on June 8, 1792, he was commander of the Holstein-Beck infantry regiment No. 11 . As a colonel (since February 9, 1793) he took part in the campaign in Poland in 1794/95 . During the battle near Piontky, he was instrumental in the capture of the Polish General Grabowsky and 4,000 enemy soldiers. For this achievement, Friedrich Wilhelm II awarded him the order Pour le Mérite on November 8, 1794 .

On March 6, 1798, the king appointed him chief of infantry regiment No. 11 and promoted Schöning to major general on June 9, 1798 . Due to his poor health, he was finally given the character of Lieutenant General on October 23, 1806, his departure.

Schöning married Eleonore Anna Katharine Sophie von Hirsch on September 28, 1774 in Königsberg (* November 4, 1753 - April 25, 1801 in Königsberg), a daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Otto Friedrich von Hirsch (1700–1780) and Eleonore von Geßler ( 1722–1801), daughter of Friedrich Leopold von Geßler . The following children were born from the marriage:

After the death of his first wife, Schöning married Katharina Charlotte Albertine von Braxein on November 18, 1805 in Königsberg (born July 31, 1757 in Tharau; † July 28, 1825 in Königsberg), the daughter of the late royal Prussian budget and war minister Fabian Abraham of Braxein . This marriage remained childless.
