Johann Volprecht Riedesel Freiherr zu Eisenbach (* 1696 ; † October 13, 1757 ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and chief of infantry regiment No. 41 .

Life

origin

Johann Volprecht was the son of Colonel Georg Riedesel Freiherr zu Eisenbach (June 1, 1647 - August 19, 1704) and Marie von Bodenhausen (1662-1711). His mother was the daughter of Bodo von Bodenhausen, heir to Niedergandern, Burgkemnitz and Neukemnitz, Groß-Ellingen and Rindtorf and Anna Sophia von Koseritz. On January 1, 1687, Bodo von Bodenhausen sold Amönau Castle (then an estate) to his son-in-law Georg Riedesel , which then came into the possession of the Riedesel family.

Military career

Riedesel was first in the electorate , then in imperial service . He fought on the Rhine and took part in two campaigns against the Ottomans . On April 22, 1737 at the Battle of Grocka , he commanded seven grenadier battalions. The battle was lost, but Riedesel held his position and Field Marshal Georg Olivier von Wallis was able to withdraw with the remnants of the army. He was hoping for his own regiment , but was refused. Therefore he accepted an offer from the Prussian King Friedrich II and joined the Prussian army .

The king knew the general from the Rhine campaign of 1734 . Therefore, on February 11, 1741, he received the completed "Fusilier Regiment Braunschweig-Bevern" . He was already able to distinguish himself in the First Silesian War . The battalion was guarding a train with the regimental treasury when it was locked in by the Austrians under General Trips . It was believed that everything was lost, but the general had a square formed around the car and was able to break through the encirclement and break through to the main army. The king praised Riedesel and embraced him publicly.

During the siege of Brieg, the major general was in command of the trenches. In 1742 the king made a visit to Wesel and appointed him lieutenant general. In 1746 Riedesel asked for his release because of illness, which was also granted. He caused a stir again on October 1, 1752, when he got into an argument with Wolf Ludwig von Schlegel and a pistol duel ensued. He finally died on October 13, 1757.

family

Riedesel married Karoline Elisabeth Schenck von Schweinsberg (* 1717; † 1787) on February 5, 1737. She was the daughter of Johann Georg Schenk zu Schweinsberg (1672–1744) and Anna Helene von Wallenstein (1684–1747). He had several children with her, including:

After his death, the widow married the privy councilor Johann Wilhelm Riedesel Freiherr zu Eisenbach (* 1705, † 1782), assessor at the Imperial Court of Justice in Wetzlar .
