Johann von Wedell

Johann von Wedel (* May 1679 in Steinbusch near Woldenberg , † July 1742 in Kuttenberg ) was a Prussian major general and chief of the infantry regiment of the same name .

Life

origin

Johann was the son of Office Commissioner Rüdiger Christian von Wedel (1645–1715) and his wife Benigna Louise. His father was the master of Steinbusch, Horst, Werder and Springe.

Military career

Wedel entered service in Brandenburg in 1696 and joined the “von Brandenburg” infantry regiment . There he became second lieutenant in 1701 . During the War of the Spanish Succession he took part in the battles near Höchstädt , Cassano , Turin and Calcinato as well as the sieges of Namur , Kaiserswerth , Rheinbergen, Landau in der Pfalz , Pizzighettone , Toulon , Susa , Exille and Fenestrelle . Wedell had advanced to major by the end of November 1713 . As such, he was involved in the campaign against Sweden in the sieges of Wismar and Stralsund in 1715/16 . After being promoted to lieutenant colonel , Wedell was transferred to the newly established regiment "von der Mosel" at the beginning of January 1723 and was appointed commander of this regiment at the end of October 1723. In 1730 he became a colonel and in 1739 received the regiment "von der Goltz" in Magdeburg . In 1741 Wedell received his promotion to major general. In the Battle of Chotusitz on May 17, 1742, he was seriously injured in the head and right loin. He came to Kuttenberg , where he died of his injuries.

family

His wife was Christina Elisabeth, daughter of Ewald Friedrich von Güntersberg from the house of Kallies and Margaretha Ursula, née von Zitzewitz (born August 26, 1680, † January 13, 1758). The couple had the following children:
