Johann Andreas Anton von Scholten , b. Schuldt (born November 3, 1723 in Hamburg ; † May 22, 1791 in Stettin ), was a Prussian major general , writer and founder of the scientific society in Treuenbrietzen . In his time he was also known as "the philosopher in the officer corps".

Life

origin

He comes from the Hanseatic merchant family Schuldt. His parents were Johann Andreas Schuldt, shipowner and businessman in Hamburg, and Christine Elisabeth Muhlen. On April 24, 1749 he was ennobled by Friedrich II of Prussia . With his ennoblement he received the name v. Scholten.

career

Scholten was initially in the Danish service. He entered Prussian service on September 2, 1742 and became a lieutenant in the grenadiers in the "Reck Garrison Regiment " . There he became Premier Lieutenant in 1748 and Chief of Staff in 1757 . On December 26, 1757 he became a captain and in 1767 a major . In 1775 he became lieutenant colonel in the "Grenadier Battalion von Rohr" , in 1778 the chief and in 1779 colonel . On March 1, 1786, he became chief of the "Basement on foot regiment" in Stettin, and on May 1, 1786, major general.

He took part in many battles of the Silesian Wars . These include the battles of Prague , Leuthen , Zorndorf , the battles of Rosenberg, Moys, Hoyerswerda and Groß-Glogau and the sieges of Kosel , Breslau , Prague and Kolberg . He was wounded near Prague and Zorndorf.

Scholten was considered one of the most learned officers and has also published, sometimes not under his name. In his garrison in Treuenbrietzen he even founded an academy in 1781, as well as the Society of Friends of Science and Good Taste . The academy was not restricted to the military, but could also be attended by people of both sexes from middle-class circles.
