Wilhelm Dietrich von Manstein (born March 6, 1741 in Kaukern , † October 6, 1809 in Kaschewen ) was a Prussian officer , most recently major general .

Life

Wilhelm Dietrich came from the old noble family von Manstein . He was the son of Konrad von Manstein (* 1712; † December 21, 1767 in Kaukern) and his wife Marie Dorothea, née Cibrovius. She was the daughter of the pastor of Pelleningken . Major General Johann Bernhard von Manstein was his brother.

Military career

Manstein was employed on March 1, 1751 as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Kalsow" No. 43 of the Prussian Army . With the regiment he took part in the battles near Prague , Kolin and Kunersdorf during the campaign in 1756/63 . For his achievements during the Battle of Liegnitz he received the order Pour le Mérite . In the further course of his military career Manstein finally rose to the position of staff captain on June 30, 1773 and then three years later came as a major in the infantry regiment "von Thadden" No. 33 . On April 26, 1778 he was transferred to the Infantry Regiment "von Erlach" No. 40 and took part with the regiment in the War of the Bavarian Succession . It was followed on 26 May 1785 was promoted to lieutenant colonel , and on June 4, 1787 Colonel . As such, Manstein became regimental commander on June 18, 1788. King Friedrich Wilhelm II appointed him chief of the 9th Infantry Regiment "von Budberg" on November 7, 1792 and gave Manstein the order to take over a brigade in the west. Shortly thereafter, on January 3, 1793, he was promoted to major general. During the campaign in 1793/94 he was at the siege of Mainz and fought near Kaiserslautern . Manstein dimitted on August 18, 1796 with a pension of 800 thalers .

His wish for a re-employment came King Friedrich Wilhelm III. in March 1799 not after. Manstein died on his Kaschewen estate, which he had acquired in June 1776.

After Manstein had received permission to marry on October 3, 1770, shortly afterwards he married Johanna Ernestine von Pannwitz (born June 20, 1757 in Herzogswalde (Saxony) ; † November 11, 1800 in Glogau ). The marriage, which was later divorced, had two children:
