The Experiminta (made up of experiment and MINT ) is a science center or interactive museum in Frankfurt am Main that was opened on March 1, 2011 through voluntary work. The museum comprises around 120 interactive test stations. Unlike in most museums, trying out and touching is expressly encouraged. It is operated by the association of the same name . With around 90,000 visitors per year from all age groups, the Science Center is the ninth largest museum in Frankfurt am Main in terms of visitor numbers.
history
With the formation of the citizens' initiative for a "Center for Mathematical and Scientific Culture (ZMNK)", planning began in 2006 in discussions with the Physikalischer Verein , the Polytechnic Society Foundation and the Frankfurt am Main Chamber of Commerce , Goethe University and the City of Frankfurt , the Hessian Ministry of Culture and other institutions and foundations. With the support of the Flensburg Phenomena and the Mathematikum from Gießen, a temporary exhibition took place in November 2007, which attracted around 10,000 visitors. The success of this exhibition motivated the members of the initiative to set up a support association to create a permanent establishment in Frankfurt am Main.
The establishment of the non-profit association ExperiMINTa Frankfurt am Main e. V. took place in spring 2008. The board of directors and many of the employees work on a voluntary basis; the association operates the Science Center.
Intensive work was carried out on an exhibition concept that was largely confirmed by a working group in the summer.
On March 1, 2011, the Experiminta opened its permanent establishment on Hamburger Allee in Frankfurt-Bockenheim . Dorothea Henzler , then Hessian Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs, was a guest at the opening and pointed out the importance of such a center for education in scientific and technical professions.
In March 2016 the Experiminta celebrated its 5th anniversary. The Hessian Science Minister Boris Rhein was also a guest at the ceremony . He emphasized that the Experiminta would contribute to counteracting the shortage of skilled workers in the MINT area in the long term.
Didactic concept
In the Science Center, the focus is on interactive experiment stations. Access to mathematics , computer science , natural sciences and technology (MINT) does not take place through theory, but playfully through "hands on", through experimentation and understanding.
The exhibition concept comprises around 130 experiment stations, which are assigned to nine subject areas, e.g. B. “Fast and slow” ( movement ), “Strong and weak” ( strength ) or “Economical and wasteful” ( energy and environment ). The visitors should recognize the connections and learn to understand them. The causes and effects of actions and external influences should be clearly worked out here. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Experiminta offers special exhibitions, family lectures, workshops, "Experiminta on Tour" (experimenting on site, e.g. at city festivals), the "Experiminta in the hospital" project, a project for career orientation "MINT - the stars of tomorrow" ( with other Hessian Science Centers), "Language Promotion for Migrants" and much more.
The Science Center is also used for training teachers and educators .
There are cooperation agreements with the Goethe University, the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule) and several Frankfurt high schools
The Hessian Ministry of Culture has recognized Experiminta as an extracurricular learning location.
Experiminta is supported by the City of Frankfurt, the State of Hesse, numerous foundations and several companies in the region.
On December 18, 2012, the museum received the state award “Social Citizenship” from the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs and recognition from the Robert Bosch Foundation . The city of Frankfurt honored the civic commitment of the Science Center on November 15, 2016 with the award of the Walter Möller plaque , which was presented by Mayor Peter Feldmann .
