Danny Groulx (born June 23, 1981 in LaSalle , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played as a defender in the American Hockey League and numerous European leagues between 1997 and 2015 .

Career

Groulx first played during his junior years for the Foreurs de Val-d'Or in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , which had selected him in the LHJMQ Entry Draft 1997 in the first round in eleventh place. In his rookie year , the defender won the Coupe du Président with the team . As a result, the team also took part in the Memorial Cup , where the team took fourth and last place. Also in the following season Groulx went on hold for the Foreurs, but was given in December 1998 in a transfer deal to the league competitor Acadie-Bathurst Titan . The defender played 36 games for Titan as well as for Val-d'Or during the season. At the end of the playoffs he was also able to win the Coupe du Président with Acadie-Bathurst, but again only finished fourth in the Memorial Cup tournament. Before the start of his third LHJMQ season, the French-Canadian moved to the Tigres de Victoriaville , where he spent the following three game years. After he was elected to the League's First All-Star Team for the first time at the end of the 2000/01 season, he completed an outstanding year in his fifth and final season - as a so-called Overage player. The defender finished the regular season with 112 points in 68 games and was also outstanding in the playoffs, in which he won the Coupe du Président for the third time in his career, with 39 points in 22 games. At the end of the season he received numerous awards, including the Trophée Émile Bouchard as the best defender and the Trophée Guy Lafleur as the most valuable player in the league. In the subsequent Memorial Cup, which he could not win after a final defeat against the Kootenay Ice even in the third attempt, he was awarded the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player of the tournament and appointed to the All-Star team. At the end of his junior career, Groulx was the record holder in these categories among all LHJMQ defenders with 266 assists and 332 points scorer.

Since Groulx in the NHL Entry Draft by the franchises of the National Hockey League has always been ignored, who took Detroit Red Wings to a free agent in early August 2002 contract. In the following three years, the Canadian ran for their farm team , the Grand Rapids Griffins , in the American Hockey League . There he was never able to connect to the performances from his last season in the LHJMQ and fell into mediocrity. He completed his best year during this time in the 2003/04 season , when he scored 21 points in 79 games for the Griffins. Until his move to the Manitoba Moose towards the end of the 2004/05 season , the defender had 203 games for Grand Rapids. In the Red Wings in the NHL he was not used.

After Groulx had finished the 2004/05 season with the Manitoba Moose, he accepted a contract offer from the Kassel Huskies from the German Ice Hockey League in summer 2005 , who had only received relegation at the Green Table in the previous season. The defender played 51 games for Kassel in the main round of the 2005/06 season , but with his 13 scorer points he was unable to prevent him from going into the playdowns . There the team was relegated in a direct duel against the Füchse Duisburg . The relegation of the Huskies to the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga meant that Groulx's contract was not extended.

He then returned to North America and joined the Hamilton Bulldogs , who were serving as the Montréal Canadiens' farm team at the time . The Canadiens invited the defender to the training camp in September, but then transferred him to the farm team. With the Bulldogs Groulx played the entire 2006/07 season , at the end of which was the win of the Calder Cup . He himself contributed - after 16 assists in the regular season - six goals and six assists in 22 playoff games. Despite the success with Hamilton, the defensive specialist moved to his former team, the Manitoba Moose, in the 2007/08 season within the league. There he had the best season in terms of his offensive production since his last year with the juniors in the LHJMQ. In only 58 games he posted 24 scorer points. This earned him an invitation to the Chicago Blackhawks training camp in September 2008, after he had become a free agent again . Groulx was again unable to earn a place in the team's squad and therefore spent the season on the farm team at the Rockford IceHogs . Once again he improved his offensive game and set new records in the categories goals, assists and points. On July 16, 2009, the San Jose Sharks franchise finally signed him for a year, where he played for their AHL cooperation partner Worcester Sharks . In 2010 he moved to Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the KHL . After a year in Nizhny Novgorod , he was signed for the 2011/12 season by HK Dinamo Minsk . After only four completed games, he moved to league rivals HK Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk in October 2011 .

After the Canadian had finished the season there, he returned to his former club in Worcester in the AHL in the summer of 2012. During the 2012/13 season he was transferred to league rivals Chicago Wolves in exchange for Derek Joslin . Then Groulx moved back to Europe and played one season each for Porin Ässät in the Finnish Liiga and the Dragons de Rouen in the French Ligue Magnus , before he declared his active career after winning the French championship over.
