With the team he won the 2003 J. Ross Robertson Cup , the OHL championship title, and then the Memorial Cup , the final tournament of the Canadian Hockey League . In the 2003/04 season he received the William Hanley Trophy as the fairest player in the OHL and in the 2004/05 season the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy as the best player over 20 years. From 2005 to 2007, the defender played for the Hamilton Bulldogs in the American Hockey League and won the Calder Cup with the team in the 2006/07 season . He then spent one season each at Tappara Tampere in the Finnish SM-liiga and Södertälje SK in the Swedish Elitserien . In the 2009/10 season he ran again for the Hamilton Bulldogs in the AHL.

On August 6, 2010 Benoit received a contract as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators , for which he prepared a goal in eight games in the National Hockey League . However , he spent most of the 2010/11 season with Ottawa's farm team Binghamton Senators in the AHL and won the Calder Cup with the team. As the best assists in the playoffs, he himself contributed significantly to winning the title and was also elected to the league's Second All-Star Team . For the 2011/12 season , the Canadian was signed by HK Spartak Moscow from the Continental Hockey League . A year later he returned to the Ottawa Senators, where he received a one-year contract.

In July 2013, Benoit signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche before he joined the Buffalo Sabers in July 2014, also for one year . The St. Louis Blues then signed him in July 2015. After the 2015/16 season, Benoit decided to move to Sweden again and signed a contract with the Malmö Redhawks . After a year in Sweden, the defender returned to the NHL when he joined the Columbus Blue Jackets in July 2017 . They used it exclusively with their AHL farm team, the Cleveland Monsters , until it was given to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on loan until the end of the season in February 2018 . At the end of the 2017/18 season, his expiring contract in Columbus was not extended.
