In 1951 he won the Grand Slam in men's doubles together with Ken McGregor .

Sedgman was an extremely fast, slim right-handed man and was known for his fitness. He was one of the Australian players who use the "Continental Grip", a grip in which the racket is held in the same way on forehand and backhand. His volleyball game and speed were feared by his opponents. His elegant style of footwork and strokes has long been a model for many other players. Although he is almost forgotten today, he can be counted among the top twenty players of all time.

He switched to the pros in 1953, ahead of the amateurs and pros joint events, becoming the first player to earn more than $ 100,000 in prize money in one year. In his first year as a professional, Jack Kramer beat him 54 to 41 in 95 games.

Sedgman won three major tournaments in the Professional World Singles Tournament and played well into the 1960s. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1979.
