Department Musik is a German multi-genre independent label . It was founded in October 2012 as a sister company of the hip-hop label Chimperator Productions under the name Chimperator Department in Berlin. Initially, Sebastian Andrej Schweizer, Jan-Simon Wolff, Steffen Posner, Kodimey Awokou and Niko Papadopoulos acted as managing directors . In the summer of 2015, after the label split from Chimperator Productions, the name was changed to Department Music . Since then, Wolff has acted as the company's sole managing director. Between 2013 and 2016 Sony Music Entertainment took over the distribution of the company's publications. The Warner Music Group has been responsible for sales since mid-2016 . The artists Finn and Kex Kuhl and the band Grizzly are currently under contract with the Berlin label. The duo Die Lochis was contractually bound as part of a cooperation with Mediakraft Networks . In the past, the artists Elenka, Lary , I Heart Sharks , Heisskalt , Psaiko.Dino , Lot and Miller were also under contract.

history

2012–2015: foundation and first successes

In October 2011, the hip-hop label Chimperator Productions signed rapper Cro . With Easy , he contributed the label's first successful single and achieved platinum status with his debut album Raop . Before Cro's contract was signed, the independent label was, according to the contractually bound Maeckes, "a kind of honorary association", through which none of the employees had been able to earn money. The commercial success of Cro resulted in the opportunity to expand Chimperator . As previously with albums by Tua publications on Chimperator Productions had appeared that could not be classified in the genre Hip-Hop, the idea was to create a department that is responsible for music that stylistically locates "left and right of Rap" is. For this purpose, Chimperator Department was founded in October 2012 as a sister company of Chimperator Productions . In addition to Sebastian Andrej Schweizer, who acts as managing director, four other shareholders and managing directors have been won for the company: Jan-Simon Wolff, Steffen Posner, Kodimey Awokou and Niko Papadopoulos. Wolff had previously worked as an A&R manager at Universal Music Publishing since 2010 and in this role had been able to conclude an author's contract with Cro.

At the beginning of October 2012, the first musicians with the independent label were signed with the rock band Heisskalt. On January 11, 2013, they released their second EP Mit Liebe brewed in a limited edition of 5,000 units via Chimperator Department and in cooperation with the independent music distributor Groove Attack . The label's second engagement followed on September 1, 2013 with the singer Lary. Lary's first release was the mixtape Lary says for free download on September 4th . Lary then appeared in the opening act of the musicians Flo Mega and Ruffcats as part of the "Man over Board" tour. In mid-September 2013, Chimperator Department signed a distribution agreement with Sony Music Entertainment . In addition to the distribution of the publications, the contract also included marketing services . At the same time as the announcement of the collaboration with Sony, the producer Psaiko.Dino was presented as the third artist. He had previously worked as an intern at Chimperator Productions and then took on the role of Cro's tour companion and producers.

The electronic musician Elenka was signed as the fourth artist at the end of October. In addition to the release of the digital single Schmetterling , Elenka completed a tour at the end of 2013 as the opening act for the band Grossstadtgeflüster . Psaiko.Dino's album #hangster was announced as the first regular album release for November 8, 2013, but was later postponed to January 17, 2014. The first music video for the album was released for the piece Klischees , a collaboration with hip-hop musicians Celo & Abdi and SAM . #hangster entered the German album charts at number 7. It is the first Chimperator Department release that has made it into the charts. On March 21, 2014, Vom Stehen und Fallen, the first regular studio album by the Heisskalt group, was released. With this she was able to position herself at number 29 in the German charts. From March to May 2014, Heisskalt completed a tour of over 30 concerts. At the beginning of June 2014, the pop singer Lot was presented as another artist on the label. At the same time, Chimperator Department published the video You are at war on its YouTube channel. In the summer of 2014 the EP followed, Wie Wärts? , which includes remixes Psaiko.Dinos of pieces by the Austrian singer Marla Blumenblatt .

On July 30, 2014, a personnel expansion of the label was announced. Lana Wittig was introduced as the new artist manager. She had previously worked for the record company Motor Music and as manager of the band I Heart Sharks. I Heart Sharks moved to Chimperator Department together with Wittig . In addition, Patricia “Pia” Dünnebier was presented as the new Junior Product Manager. On September 12th, FutureDeutscheWelle , the debut album of the singer Lary, and the EP Why should that change by Lot were released. At the beginning of 2015 Lot accompanied the singer Teesy's lucky recipes tour . Then published Chimperator Department under the title 200 days the first album of Lot. This rose to number 100 in the German album charts. Elenka, whose Anuschka EP was released in November 2014, also released her debut album on May 22, 2015, entitled Elenka .

From 2015: restructuring and cooperation with Mediakraft and Warner Music

Three years after the label was founded, Chimperator Department separated from Chimperator Productions in July 2015 . In connection with this, the name was changed to Department Music . In addition, Jan-Simon Wolff took over the sole management of the independent label. The structural changes did not affect the distribution agreement with Sony Music Entertainment . In the summer of 2015, the label also signed a cooperation agreement with the multi-channel network Mediakraft Networks . This specializes in the distribution and marketing of YouTubers . The collaboration between the two companies should enable Mediakraft artists to publish music albums. While Department Music provides the label structures, Mediakraft takes over the online marketing of the albums. With the single Ab geht’s des Zwillingsduo Die Lochis, the first publication of this cooperation appeared on July 31, 2015.

On August 29, the singer Lary represented the federal state of Berlin as part of the Bundesvision Song Contest 2015 initiated by Stefan Raab . With her song Bedtime Blues she reached number 11. With several appearances in the German pavilion, musician Elenka was represented at the world exhibition Expo 2015 in Milan, Italy . Lary's Bedtime Blues Tour followed at the end of 2015, as well as the release of the singles Bruder vor Luder , the theme song of the duo Die Lochis' film of the same name , and Pockets 2K15 by Psaiko.Dino. In addition, Department Music terminated the artist contracts with Elenka and Lary. In early 2016 I Heart Sharks' album Anthems was released as a re-release . While I Heart Sharks then left Department Music , the bands Miller and Grizzly received artist contracts. The release of Grizzly's debut album under the title Kidlife Crisis followed on May 27th . Subsequently, the group completed several concerts organized by the booking agency Extratours Konzertbüro . With From knowing and willing the second studio album was released on June 10, 2016 Hot Cold. The band had previously been on tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

In the summer of 2016, Department Music signed a long-term distribution agreement with the Warner Music Group . Since then, the department of Marcus Friedheim has taken over the distribution previously covered by Sony Music . The first product from the collaboration with the major label was Die Lochis' debut album #zwilling on August 19th . This reached number 1 in the German album charts as the first release of the independent label . The highest chart position was also achieved in Austria . In addition, #zwilling positioned itself at number 4 on the Swiss album charts. The Lochis then released a symphonic edition of their album, completed a tour and received the Golden Camera Digital Award . In the fall, Heisskalt went on the Vom-Wissen-und-Wollen tour for which the single Lebenwert was released.

At the end of November 2016, Department Music presented the singer Finn as a new artist. After a number of single releases, Finn's album Wie weit was released on February 10th . In the spring the label started a collaboration with the rock band Loifior and the singer Jannik Brunke. This was followed by the albums Poison Arrows , which the singer Marla Blumenblatt had recorded under the pseudonym Marla Pétale, and New Happiness from Memo an Miller in October 2017. Furthermore, Department Music focused on the pop-punk band Grizzly. After the EP release Summer and several tours as the opening act for StaatsPunkrott and the Emil Bulls , the band's second album was announced in winter, which was released on January 19, 2018 under the title Polaroids . At number 51, Grizzly entered the album charts for the first time. In mid-April 2018, the rapper Kex Kuhl signed a contract with the label.
