For the opponent! -

For the opponent! is the second solo album by German rapper Tony D . It was released on September 11, 2009 through Universal Music Group . The album did not enter the charts, which means it can be rated as a failure in relation to Tony D's debut album Totalschaden , which reached number 21 on the German charts.

background

In 2007 Tony D's first solo album Totalschaden was released on the Berlin label Aggro Berlin , with which he had signed a contract two years earlier. In the following time, the rapper appeared mainly as a guest musician on albums by other hip-hop musicians. Tony D's second album was originally announced for May 8, 2009 under the title Die Gegnaz . After Aggro Berlin announced its closure on April 1st, 2009, Tony D lost his label platform and the release of his album was initially postponed to May 28th and finally to September 11th, 2009. The record company Universal Music Group , which had cooperated with Aggro Berlin for the previous year and a half and supported the marketing of the sound carriers, took over the release of the album Für die Gegnaz! . In contrast to Kitty Kat , who also had a contract with Aggro Berlin , Tony D was not taken over as an artist by Universal . In an interview, the rapper commented on his situation: “ I understand […] why I am nothing for labels like Universal . They don't believe in me and I don't believe in them. Aggro was a big label, but always had a heart for underground artists like me. That's why it's a shame that they are no longer there. "

Guest Posts

For for the opposite! Tony D worked with a large number of rappers from his immediate environment. This is how songs were created with Sido , Kitty Kat and B-Tight , who had previously been under contract with him at Aggro Berlin . Freddy Cool is represented on two tracks. He is a member of the Green Medicine group and, like most of the members of Die Sekt, is under contract with the independent label Sektenmuzik . In addition, the title Meine Gang can be highlighted, for which he collaborated with the groups TMR and BC. At the beginning of his musical career, Tony D joined the TMR gang under the name Drell One. This made contact with the group BC, which is formed by the hip-hop musicians Frauenarzt , MC Basstard and MC Bogy , and finally became a member of the Bassboxxx label .

marketing

On August 21, 2009, the title Jackpot was published as an eSingle. A video was released for the song produced by Flashgordon, in which Tony D plays various computer games and can also be recognized as a character in them. Furthermore, a snippet was published in which the songs from Für die Gegnaz! are alluded to.

Another video was released for Hundert Metaz , which was released on September 4, 2009 as the second eSingle. The title had previously appeared on the label sampler Aggro Anti Announcement No. 8 and was partially shown in a so-called "split video" in the course of marketing, in which, in addition to sequences of the video to Hundred Metaz , the title Five crass rappers by Sido , Tony D, Kitty Kat, Fler and B-Tight as well as So It's been processed by Sido and Fler.

criticism

The editors of the e-zine Laut.de rated Für die Gegnaz! , like the previous album Totalschaden , negative. In the review written by Dani Fromm, the publication received two out of a possible five evaluation points. Tony D can only roar in one tone and cannot do anything beyond that. In terms of content, the texts revolve around “ pubescent drinking, smoking, beating and fucking fantasies ”. In addition, the rapper repeats himself "in terms of content, expression and reproduction " over the entire album. For the listener, however, Tony D seems to enjoy the music, which Fromm attributes to the “ celebrated amateurism ” that leads the listener to question whether Tony D takes his music seriously or not. Fromm comments positively on the booklet, which underlines the “ comic-like character ” of the album with its illustrations . The productions of the titles are also well received by critics. The guest rappers make a good impression, which the editor justifies with the fact that even less talented hip-hop musicians make a good impression alongside Tony D.

In a review by hip-hop magazine Juice , Tony D's second album received three and a half of a possible six "crowns". From the point of view of a discerning rap listener, Tony D is a gimmick , but through his previous work " Right to exist and fans [...] he has now proven himself." “The lyrics on the album deal with the threat and erasure of“ Gegnaz ”on almost every track. Despite this point of criticism, the album works, thanks to a “ consistently high energy level ” and the production that matches Tony D's style, “ quite okay. "

A relatively detailed review was published on the Rappers.in website. According to the editor, Tony D cannot be compared to other German rappers because he lacks most of the qualities of a talented rapper. The album's “ almost childlike charm ” is evident from the comic song titles such as Bäm Bäm or Paff Paff . The directness and the " only seemingly involuntarily funny note " are praised positively . Nevertheless, the editor questions that there are many listeners who want to listen to the thematic simplicity (" explosions, chases and excesses of violence ") over a longer period of time . In one paragraph the critic creates a relationship between the idea for the character Tony D and the rap scene: " I don't want to go so far as to stylize Mohamed Ayad's fictional character to deliberately exaggerate the ultimately ubiquitous insubstantiality of contemporary rap music but it would be conceivable ...
