Reese River near Austin |
The Reese River is a 291-kilometer tributary of the Humboldt River in central Nevada in the western United States .
course
The Reese River rises in the southern part of the Toiyabe Range , on the flanks of the Arc Dome . In its upper reaches, the Reese River is a fast flowing mountain stream surrounded by relatively lush vegetation of aspen groves and poplar trees . Then it flows north for about half its length between the Toiyabe Range and the Shoshone Mountains . The river then flows through a valley in the Shoshone Mountains and continues north between that mountain range and the Fish Creek Mountains . Once it leaves the Toiyabe Range, the river becomes a slow, muddy creek, and its water is used for irrigation by scattered farms and ranches along its lower reaches. Although considered a tributary of the Humboldt River, for most years the Reese River sinks into a chain of shallow basins long before it reaches the mainstream of the Humboldt River. Only in rare cases does the water flow into the Humboldt River near Battle Mountain . The Nevada State Route 305 runs parallel to the bottom, mostly dry section of the riverbed between Austin and Battle Mountain.
designation
The river is named after John Reese , who explored the area as part of Colonel Edward Steptoe's expedition in 1854 and later served as the guide for Captain James H. Simpson's exploration for a military road through central Nevada. The mining town of Austin, on the upper reaches of the Reese River, calls their newspaper Reese River Reveille after the river.
