geography
Although the Toiyabe Range lies in the rain shadow of the higher Sierra Nevada to the west and is too dry for forests (with the exception of scattered pine trees), the climate during the Pleistocene was cold and snowy enough for alpine glaciers to develop in several places. This is still visible through cirques , moraines and other Ice Age features. There are numerous hiking trails in the mountains, including one along the ridge .
The Toiyabe Range is separated from the Shoshone Mountains to the west by the Reese River valley , but the mountain ranges merge at their southern ends. To the east, the Toiyabe Range is separated from the Toquima Range by the Big Smoky Valley .
The historic mining community of Austin is located on the western slope of the Toiyabe Range, roughly in the middle of the range. The US Route 50 , the "Loneliest Highway in America", runs through Austin and then crossing the Range at Austin Summit at an altitude of 2281 meters (7484 feet ). The US Route 6 or 95 leads south of the area between Tonopah and Ely over. South of Austin, Nevada State Route 376 runs west and Nevada State Route 21 runs parallel to the range to the east .
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest
The Toiyabe Range is located in the Austin Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest .
Toiyabe Crest Trail
The National Recreation Toiyabe Crest Trail runs through the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in the Toiyabe Range, consisting of over 113 km (70 miles) of trails on the ridge, 48 km (30 miles) of which are through the Arc Dome Wilderness . This was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s and runs through one of the longest roadless areas in Nevada.
