The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is a national forest in the US state of Nevada with a smaller section in eastern California . With an area of 25,454 km², it is the largest national forest in the United States outside of Alaska .
geography
Unlike most other national forests, the National Forsest is made up of numerous discontinuous sections that are scattered across much of the state of Nevada and part of eastern California. Ten ranger districts are located in the mountain ranges of Nevada, from the Santa Rosa Range in the north to the Spring Mountains near Las Vegas in the south. About 11% of the forest is in eastern California, including around Bridgeport and Markleeville and other areas east of the Sierra Nevada.
The forest is located in 13 counties in Nevada and in six California counties. The counties with the largest forest area are Nye , Elko, and White Pine Counties in Nevada and Mono Counties in California. The forest headquarters are located in Sparks , Nevada.
- Humboldt National Forest section
The smaller and northeastern Humboldt National Forest lies in the east and north of Nevada, in parts of the counties Elko, White Pine, Humboldt , Nye and Lincoln . This part is named after the natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt and contains around 43.5% of the total area.
- Toiyabe National Forest section
The larger and southwestern Toiyabe National Forest is in central, western and southern Nevada and eastern California, in parts of the Nye , Lander , Mineral , Lyon , Eureka , Washoe , Douglas and Clark Counties , in Carson City and the Mono , Alpine , Sierra , Nevada , Lassen, and El Dorado counties in California. The section contains about 56.5% of the total area.
