The Current Mountain Wilderness is a nature reserve of the type of a Wilderness Area in Nye County and White Pine Counties of the US state Nevada . The area is located in the White Pine Range and covers an area of ​​around 191.6 km². It bears the name of the highest peak in the mountain range at 3505 m, Currant Mountain , on which the headwaters for the White Pine River are located. Other prominent peaks are the Duckwater with 3413 m and the 3097 m high White Pine Peak .

The reserve was established as Currant Mountain Wilderness by the United States Congress in 1989 under the Nevada Wilderness Protection Act of 1989 . At the same time, 13 further wilderness areas in Nevada with a total area of ​​2966 km² were designated. Two of them are in the immediate vicinity, the White Pine Range Wilderness borders in the north across a road, the Red Mountain Wilderness in the east on the reserve. As a wilderness area , no tourist or other infrastructure was created, there are no roads, but hiking trails are maintained.

The area is part of the National Forest area Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest , and is controlled by the US Forest Service managed. Due to the limestone cliffs, there is little surface water. The 3.2 km² White Pine Research Natural Area is entirely within the Currant Mountain Wilderness. The altitude ranges from 1890 m in the lower elevations to the summit of Currant Mountain at 3505 m.

Flora and fauna

In the lower elevations, the grasses and plants of the desert sagebrush steppes with pinyon pines - juniper bushes grow. Colorado fir , flexible pine , awn pine and long-lived pine have their locations at higher altitudes .

Game birds , bighorn sheep and elk can be found in the northern areas. Mule deer and birds of prey prefer the southern areas. There are also smaller mammals such as the rock chipmunk and several bat species such as Myotis volans and Myotis evotis . Various bird species such as ponderosa scops owl , broad-tailed hummingbird , basic Ammer , Rotbürzel Warbler and Mourning Warbler , pinyon jay and mountain chickadee populates the air of the wilderness area.

Permitted uses include nature observation, trekking and climbing and hunting, but no use of motorized and mechanical means of transport or aids.
