The Arc Dome Wilderness is a nature reserve of the type of a Wilderness Area in Nye County of the US state Nevada . The area lies in the Basin and Range region and, with an area of ​​around 465 km², comprises the southern third of the Toiyabe Range , a mountain range of the type of an eyrie that extends roughly in a north-south direction. It bears the name of the highest peak in the mountain range at 3591 m, the Arc Dome .

The reserve was established by the United States Congress in 1989 under the Nevada Wilderness Protection Act of 1989 . At the same time, 13 further wilderness areas in Nevada with a total area of ​​2966 km² were designated. As a wilderness area , no tourist or other infrastructure was created, there are no roads, but hiking trails such as the Cow Canyon Trail or the Toiyabe Crest Trail, which is marked as the National Recreation Trail , are maintained with a length of 116 km.

The character of the area is shaped by the high mountains . In the northwest, the wilderness area rises more evenly and with a slight gradient from the valley of the Rise River , in the southwest lies the Indian Valley . To the Big Smoke Valley with Navada State Route 376 to the east, the landscape is rocky, rugged and rugged. To the north, the terrain extends to the summit of Ophir Hill. The area is part of the National Forest area Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest and is controlled by the US Forest Service managed.

Flora and fauna

In the lower elevations, the grasses and plants of the Sagebrush steppes grow with Pinion-Juniper bush communities, pines and aspen. The high areas are largely free of trees.

The desert subspecies of the bighorn sheep , which has become rare, can be found in the northeastern areas . Pumas, lynx, mule deer , beaver, mugwort and chukar chicken are more common. Also sagebrush vole , Columbia Spotted Frog , the big brown bat and Great Basin Skink live in the wilderness area. Birds of prey in the area include golden eagles, corner-tailed corsairs , great spotted falcons and hawks. Other representatives of the bird world are Flicker , Clark's Nutcracker , mugwort Ammer , Mourning Warbler and American Yellow Warbler . Trout swim in the running waters of the Reese River, South Twin Creek, and North Twin Creek.

Permitted uses include trekking and climbing, nature and star gazing, fishing and hunting, but no use of motorized means of transport or aids, including mountain bikes.
