The highway begins on US Highway 93 near Hiko and ends near Preston on US Highway 6 . The State Route is often used as a shortcut between Ely and Las Vegas . It closes twice a year as NV 318 hosts the Nevada Open Road Challenge and the Silver State Classic Challenge .
