Bert Vogelstein (born June 2, 1949 in Baltimore , Maryland , USA ) is an American cancer researcher at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Bert Vogelstein received his bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 and his Medical Doctor in 1974 from Johns Hopkins University. He then worked as a pediatrician at Johns Hopkins Hospital (internship 1974/75, residency 1975/76, both in pediatrics) before moving to the National Cancer Institute for two years from 1976 to 1978 . He returned to Johns Hopkins Hospital, this time to oncology . In 1978 he became an assistant professor there, in 1983 an associate professor and in 1989 he was appointed professor of oncology.

His discovery that cancer from benign polyps developed (the so-called. Adenoma-carcinoma sequence ) that the screening method for colorectal cancer using colonoscopy revolutionized. This sequence was proven by the endoscopic polypectomy (removal of polyps), which was first performed in 1969 by Peter Deyhle in Erlangen.

According to the Institute for Scientific Information, Vogelstein was the most cited clinical physician in the world between 1994 and 2004 .
