The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1394 (also called Chodorostaw due to its location at two ponds ) and received Magdeburg city rights in the 15th century . The city belonged to Austrian Galicia from 1774 to 1918 and was the seat of a district administration from 1850 to 1867 and, from 1867, a district court in the Bóbrka district . In 1866, a station on the railway line from Lviv to Chernivtsi (the Lemberg-Chernivtsi-Jassy railway ) was opened in the village , later the lines from Stryj and Podwysokie (with a connection to the Halicz – Ostrów-Berezowica (Tarnopol)) were added and made the city a major railway junction, the local industry developed quickly. After the end of the First World War , the place became part of Poland and in the course of the Soviet occupation of Eastern Poland in the course of the Hitler-Stalin Pact during the Second World War, it was initially used by the Red Army (Western Poland through Hitler's Germany) and from June 22, 1941 with the Attack on the Soviet Union occupied by Germany until 1944 . During this time the Jewish inhabitants of the town were deported to the concentration camps and exterminated ( Holocaust ).

In 1945 the city came back to the Soviet Union ( Poland was shifted to the west ), where it became part of the Ukrainian SSR and has been part of today's Ukraine since 1991.
