Horodok ( Ukrainian Городок ; Russian Городок Gorodok , Polish Gródek or from 1906 Gródek Jagielloński , German rarely Grodeck ) is a Ukrainian city with a little over 16,000 inhabitants and the administrative center of the Horodok district . It is located on the Wereschyzja in Lviv Oblast and is located on the connecting road M 11 / E 40 , 24 km southwest of the district capital Lviv . The next largest city is Lviv.

history

The village was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1213, and in 1389 it received Magdeburg city rights . In 1655 the city was the scene of a battle during the Russo-Polish War 1654–1667 .

Until 1772 the place in the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania belonged to the Ruthenian Voivodeship and came under Austrian rule through the Polish partitions until 1918 as part of Galicia . Since 1850 the place was the seat of the district administration Gródek , in 1867 a district court was added.

The presence of Jews in the city has been documented since 1444, and since 1662 they were settled in a special quarter ( Gnin ). In 1900 there were 3610 members of the Jewish community, that is about 30% of the population.

During the First World War , the place was several times in the front area . At the end of August 1914, as part of the battle in Galicia, a Russian offensive took place that pushed the Austro-Hungarian army back to Gródek. On September 7, 1914, the Russians conquered the city in the Battle of Gródek after bitter fighting. The Austrian poet Georg Trakl processed his experiences during the battle in his poem Grodek . After the counter-offensive by the Central Powers in the Battle of Gorlice-Tarnów , the front ran in June 1915 along the Dniester and its northern tributary, the Wereszyka. On June 17, 1915, a breakthrough offensive by the German army began with the Battle of Gródek (1915) between Gródek and Magierów . The fierce fighting lasted until June 20, 1915 and prompted the Russian army to withdraw from this section of the front. This enabled the Central Powers to recapture Lviv .

After the end of the First World War, Gródek came to Poland and was from 1921 in the Lviv Voivodeship . in September 1939 the city was occupied by the Soviet Union . Then and again in 1945 the place became part of Ukraine under the name Horodok. After the German invasion of Poland, the number of Jewish residents rose to over 5,000, due to refugees from western Poland. After the German invasion in July 1941, the majority of the Jewish population was sent to forced labor or to the Belzec death camp . In May 1943 the rest of the ghetto was liquidated, the last inhabitants were shot and burned. A Jewish community no longer exists today.

Horodok is the place of death of the Polish king Władysław II Jagiełło .
