Uhniw (Ukrainian Угнів ; Russian Угнев / Ugnew , Polish Uhnów ) is a small town in western Ukraine about 62 kilometers northwest of the oblast capital Lviv on the bank of the Solokija ( Солокія ). The border with Poland runs about 1 kilometer north of the city. The township also includes the village of Sastawne ( Заставне ) located northwest towards the Polish border on the other side of the Solokija .
The village was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1360 and received Magdeburg city rights in 1462 . At that time it was in the Bełz Voivodeship as part of the aristocratic republic of Poland . From 1772 to 1918 the city belonged to the Austrian Galicia and from 1854 to 1867 was the seat of a district administration , then until 1918 it was assigned to the Rawa Ruska district and also the seat of a district court. After the end of the First World War , the place came to Poland . During the Second World War , the village was occupied by the Soviet Union from September 1939 to June 1941 and by Germany from 1941 to 1944 and came back to Poland after the end of the war. During the Soviet occupation, Uhniw became the capital of the Uhniw / Ugnew Rajon from January 1940 , but the entire Rajon was officially assigned to Poland again in October 1944.
In the course of the Polish-Soviet exchange of territory in 1951, the city and the surrounding area came to the Soviet Union because of their large coal deposits, where they became part of the Ukrainian SSR . Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, it has been part of independent Ukraine.
The city is the smallest city in Ukraine with a population of around 1000.
